From the Author
This book was a labor of love. From the very beginning through the entire process, facts, sometimes hard to believe, unfolded before me in a timely fashion. When I needed a bit of information, the telephone would ring and the person on the other end would have what I was looking for or would direct me where to look. The people in Michigan and Virginia were all so willing to give up their time to answer questions and give their side of the story. I felt honored to meet folks eager to share their story, who were children during World War II, and speak to "The Spirit of South High's" pilot and one of the co-pilots, both 99-years young. I feel privileged to have been able to preserve this little known story from home front America during World War II.

If ever a book was charmed, it's this one.  I do hope you enjoy it.

We Bought a WWII Bomber

Here are three observations about WE BOUGHT A WWII BOMBER by North Carolina author, Sandra Warren:

1. Sandra did a great deal of research. The amount of details in this book for adults and teens is reflected in the extensive bibliography.

2. Today's teenagers are different than the patriotic, self-sacrificing teenagers who lived seventy years ago. Those students learned how to live with shortages of food, how to collect materials that could be re-purposed for the war effort, and willingly participated in scrap metal drives and rationing. Would we see that type of commitment and patriotism today?

3. I knew that Kate and Lillie, the protagonists in my book, Half-Truths, would have been in elementary school during World War II. Reading this book made the time period come alive for me and helped me think more deeply about how those shortages affected them.

WE BOUGHT A WWII BOMBER is the story of a dedicated group of junior and senior high students who raised more than $375,000 by selling War Bonds and War Stamps to purchase a B-17 bomber. The story begun in 1942 by a quiet student, Arthur Blackport, when he suggested that his fellow students at South High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan work together to purchase a Flying Fortress.

Not only did the students raise enough money to purchase the bomber, but they also successfully raised money to buy an advanced trainer plane,as well as two disaster vehicles (which were a combination canteen, ambulance, and hospital car), and sixty-three fully equipped landing barges.

After the bomber was officially christened and flown off, the students wondered what happened to it. "How many battles had it won? How many German or Japanese planes had it destroyed?" (p. 49)

For seventy years no one knew what happened to the plane. The students heard rumors, but no facts. But in 2012, at her Class of 1962 fiftieth South High reunion, a remark which Sandra Warren made about "Searching for the Spirit" prompted a fellow classmate, Joe Rogers, to start digging for the truth.

Joe uncovered the fate of "The Spirit of South High" which enabled Sandra to write this story.

Extraordinary Narrative

This extraordinary narrative, We Bought a WWII Bomber, isn’t just about a school accomplishing unbelievable heights in the government sponsored “Buy a Bomber” campaign, although by the time I completed the book, I did feel a little jealous that I didn’t attend this remarkable school. While author Sandra Warren gives readers a glimpse into the reality of life during war times, her research takes us beyond the halls of Grand Rapids, Michigan’s South High into the bomber itself during its final hours and into the community it impacted. This is a not-to-be-missed story of determination and valor.

This book is amazing. Real people, a real town and a impossible goal. I never set the book down, it was that good. I found myself reading out loud so my entire family could be on the same wonderful journey I was on. The pictures were perfectly placed to remind the reader that this happened, it is a true story from WWII. Did you know this took place? I didn't. I never learned about this in history class and I wonder if kids today would ever band together for a cause like this. Well done Sandra Warren! I loved it.

The Millionaire from Nazareth is part of the Millionaires of the Bible series. I enjoyed it so much, that I have purchased the remaining books and have received great insight and inspiration which can be applied on a daily basis. Remember the graveyard dream scene in Fiddler on the Roof? Dybbuks, troubled spirits who try to enact their ascent into the afterlife by borrowing someone else's life, played an important instructional role in Jewish mythology as messengers, judges, or scolds. This collection contains the novella-sized drama "A Dybbuk or Between Two Worlds," plus 13 shorter tales of the spirit world. In the title story, a deceased man possesses the body of his beloved Leah. As Leah comes to realize what has happened, she resolves to sacrifice herself in order to be with her intended bridegroom. His shroud of death becomes sunlight when Leah finally joins him. In "God on Trial," God gets in trouble for, among other things, the destruction of the Temple, which He had decreed. The judges decide that God made a mistake and had inspired the emperor to issue the order. Upon God's recanting of the edict, the emperor concurs, and all is well again. "The Creation Melody" is a the folktale of a song performed for completion of structures. It was composed during a fundraiser in which the congregation of a synagogue found that they no longer had the funds for completion of construction. The rabbi was challenged, for a price, to come up with a new song within five minutes. When he did, the challenge was paid and the synagogue was finished. Each story in this collection depicts a piece of an ancient culture with a rich literary heritage. --SusanSwartwout

Because of his multiple-award-winning Angels in America (1993^-94), Kushner is about the hottest ticket in American theater. Highly interested in his Jewish heritage, he is also an experienced adapter of classic plays in other languages. Considering all those qualities, he seems a natural to renovate the greatest Yiddish theatrical classic for modern American sensibilities. His version, based on Neugroschel's translation, of S. Ansky's melodrama about a young bride invaded by the soul of the man who should have been her husband is operatically intense and spooky, of a piece with contemporary popular entertainments that powerfully mix passion and mysticism--The Exorcist comes immediately to mind, but A Dybbuk is more refined and more disturbing in the questions it provokes about the flesh and the spirit. The play is of normal length, so this volume is nicely filled out by a selection of Ansky's verse and prose that includes folktales, religious fables, and a Jewish apocalyptic prophecy that the Christian John of Patmos could not make more severe. A great play and some interesting ancillary material

If Harold Bloom, in his afterword to the play, is to be believed, Tony Kushner has taken great liberties in adapting this 'classic of Yiddish theater.' Unfamiliar with the source material, I can only comment on how wonderful Kushner's version is.
A DYBBUK is the story of a gifted rabbinical student named Chonen who begins dabbling in the mystical text of the Kabbalah. He seeks to use it to prevent the arranged marriage of the girl he is in love with, Leah. Instead, it causes him to die and to inhabit her body. What follows is a wonderful supernatural investigation as to why Chonen has become 'a dybbuk' and how to seperate him from Leah without killing her. I really enjoyed it.
I'm a Kushner fan, and that's what led me here. I thoroughly admired what he did in freely adapting Pierre Cornielle's L'ILLUSION COMIQUE into THE ILLUSION. This DYBBUK another triumph of translation. As a goy (a non-Jew), I had no problem following the parts of the play that delved into Chassidic (their spelling) culture and Jewish law.
Speaking of translation, several other short stories by -- and folk tales collected by -- S. Ansky are included. They are interesting and provide a sort of background to the play. They are bittersweet in that most of them are joyful and about songs, but they are also final traces of a European Jewish culture that, after the terrors of Hitler, can never exist as it once did.
The stories are only a few pages each and read as if they were originally written in English, which is the best you can ask of a translation. Two are in trocaic tetrameter. One is a take off on the book of Revelations. Many of them deal with the origin of songs, or legends about Baal Shem Tov.
But the play is the main thing. It's a great story and Kushner overlays it with philosophical and theological dimensions that will please fans of ANGELS IN AMERICA. For those interested in Yiddish theater, and those who are fans of Kushner, I wholeheartedly recommend A DYBBUK. 5/5 stars.

THE dybbuk

This is THE version of the play to read. I've tried to read several other translations, and this is the first time I've made it all the way through, thanks to Kushner's adaptation, which is lean and poetic. At no point did I space out because I didn't understand the tradition or the arcana. Chonen's dabbling in Kabbalah feels timely and even appropriate given the rapidly changing world in which he lives. The horrors of the twentieth century are knocking on the doors of the Jews of Brinnitz and Mirapol, Poland is heading over the brink, and an old way of life is doomed not just by historical forces but by the wavering faith of its leaders. Against the lukewarm spirit of the rabbis and community leaders stand the love of Chonen and Leah and the spiritual betrothal which guides them. Condemned to live in two worlds, they take the ultimate step beyond life into the darkness where opposites not only unite, but fuse in a soul-marriage. The mystical rapture they achieve makes the practical, ethical religion of the elders seem faint and puny, but they must die to the world to achieve their hearts' desire. This is a romantic form of tragedy that's stirring to the soul but also troubling for those of us who have opted for life. In classic tragedy, the protagonist walks on, wounded but wiser; with this play, the reader is the tragic hero. You leave this play with the sense of having seen something long hidden and obscured. I don't want what Leah and Chonen found, but I want to keep the candle of their love alight in my soul as I try to manage the treacherous currents of reality. Reading this play is like going to the crossroads with Robert Johnson -- it's important to see it, to know it, and to dance there, but you must finally choose your own road and walk into your own life to really play the blues.

“I can clearly remember the day I collapsed on my bed completely desperate and crying out to God,” Gary said. “My wife, Drenda, and I were believers, but something obviously wasn’t working. We were faithful to our church, and we loved God, but something clearly wasn’t right. Nothing had changed for NINE very long years. Things had only gotten worse.”

That was when God revealed several life-changing things to Gary, and his life and his finances were drastically changed. Gary and his wife, Drenda, went from financial ruin to being completely debt free over the next two and a half years, even paying cash for cars and for their dream house. 

Ever since then, Gary has been on a mission to help people all around the world experience the same financial revolution that he experienced.

very good, some of the stories are the same from previous books, but still tons of good information, always good for a refresher on this type of information
This is strong foundational principles that I grew up, we did not grow up with a charge card. You had the money or you did not and you saved. The biggest difference is realizing that God is on your side, you are his child, he wants to proper you and your family in all areas. This being said you have to pray, plan to some extent, pray over your children, family members, prays as if the mountain has already been moved. I have read I believe 4 books and a couple of download CD type items from Gary Keesee. I remember Drenda on TV long before I ever heard of Gary. I think God opened my eyes to this author, very good information.
Do not borrow, pay your bills, save, plan, buy what you need-not everything in the store
Get joy from your family not things that you will have to clean, dust or replace
Keep things in perspective they are tools nothing more
You want take your stuff in a u-haul to heaven, thank goodness

I like the deep, solid, and practical wisdom and teaching on finances. I've been wanting to read some Christian stuff regarding finances which has proven true. Love the honest and humor approach of pastor Gary Keesee.

I'd recommend the book to all Christians.

The book, from my perspective, deserves all the 5 stars. A man went from the very bottom to high top and openly shares the Biblical principles which are available to anyone who would dare open their heart and mind to it.
