It's not just sheet music, but a 48 page course in Boogie Woogie piano

The author, Sharon A. Pease (1903-1959) attended the American College of music in Chicago and began teaching there in 1934. He composed music and wrote a monthly column for "Downbeat Magazine", discussing the biography and piano style of famous pianists that he interviewed. He also wrote a monthly column in jamboree magazine showing how to play chords. He opened his own Studio of Modern Piano in 1939. In Phoenix, he opened Keynote Music Distributors, selling phonograph records with major labels. He sometimes used the pseudonym Yardley Yates because he didn't want his students to know that he wrote "party songs" Several of his songs were recorded. He also wrote the instruction books: "Boogie-Woogie Fundamentals" (1940), "Boogie-Woogie Piano Styles No. 1" (1940) ("The history, development and art of playing the boogie woogie style") and "Boogie-Woogie Piano Styles No. 2" (1943),"88 Keys to Fame," "Styles of Famous 88'ers," "Sharon Pease Easy Block Chords", and "Sharon Pease 3 in 1 Piano Folio."

Boogie-Woogie Piano Styles No. 1 has 48 pages. It was used at Columbia University in New York to teach their students the Boogie Woogie. This book starts with a brief history about the Boogie Woogie. It then describes the styles of Meade Lux Lewis, Albert Ammons, Pete johnson and Mary Lou Williams. It continues with the basic forms of the Boogie. It gives you 25 Boogie styles in the key of C. It ends with the walking bass, and it's application to a twelve measure theme from the composition "Flinging A Whing-Ding" in the key of G. There are no fingerings.

Verdict:
Sharon Pease became an authority on Boogie Woogie. I have rated tons of Boogie Woogie books. This book is one of the better ones, but it's not for the absolute beginner.

1Corninthians 13 talks about 'the greatest of these is love' when speaking of faith hope and love. So it makes sense to have a daily devotional on love. It def. kept me on my toes, challenging me daily to walk in love!

A great devotional

This book changed my life. I thought I knew about the love of God, but this book really makes it practical for both receiving from God and giving to others. I love how the Copeland's defend God's honor from the many misconceptions that have crept into organized religion over the centuries. You will really gain a new perspective of God's love and our responsibility from reading this book daily. I marked up my copy as I went through it last year with notes and scripture notations. This is my second year through it and I really enjoy seeing the notes and comments I made last year.

About the Author
Dr. James T. Shipman was a long-time physics educator at Ohio University, his alma mater, and was Professor Emeritus until his passing in 2009.

Jerry Wilson received his physics degrees from Ohio University (B.S., Ph.D.) and Union College in Schenectady, New York (M.S.). In addition to co-writing PHYSICS LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS, he is one of the original authors of the first edition of AN INTRODUCTION OF PHYSICAL SCIENCE (published in 1971) and has several other physics textbooks to his credit. Wilson is currently Emeritus Professor of Physics at Lander University in Greenwood, South Carolina.

Chuck Higgins received his B.S. degree in physics from the University of Alabama in Huntsville in 1988 and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees form the University of Florida in 1996. Areas of interest and research include planetary radio astronomy and astronomy education and public outreach. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Middle Tennessee State University in Mufreesboro, Tennessee. He is the 2007-8 recipient of the MTSU Outstanding Teacher Award, and is also the recipient of the NASA Excellence in Outreach Award for his work on NASA's Radio Jove Project in 2005.

Links to a physical book but recieved a slip of paper with a link to a digital copy.

Title says it all, ordered a book, or at least the item linked to a book and got a slip of paper instead with a digital download link to google drive. This is super illegal just so you know, a federal judge ruled it is illegal to sell used digital copies of books. E-books are considered an original version of the author’s work. If you’ve already bought a version and then sell it to someone else, you’re making an illegal copy of the original work

This book is not in great shape. The covers feel dirty and are extremely scratched up al over. I am very disappointed in my purchase for the amount that I spent. There are also stickers all over the outside saying used, but they are halfway scratched off. Even if I sold this book back right now, I wouldn't make anything on it du to the condition.

Clever and Useful Approach to Accomplishing Common Tasks

I thoroughly enjoyed the tone of this book. While often light-hearted and smattered with just the right touch of humor, Common College Sense does what it sets out to do: provide insight on accomplishing everyday tasks in a visually simplifying (and pleasing) manner. Take for instance the section on tying a tie. Not an easy task for a first timer, but the simple illustrations are shown in first-person perspective. While this seems like no big deal, it's actually a very intelligent approach to describing how to solve the task. I learned some new tricks for old tasks and chuckled a few times along the way. A very well-designed book that you'll be coming back to time and again.

Simple, elegant and fun

Common College Sense takes a simple and effective approach to illustrating everyday tasks. Divided into sections like Clothes, Living Quarters, Automobile Maintenance, Moving, etc, the book takes on tasks like tying a scarf, sewing, removing stains and changing a car tire. Each task is laid out across two pages. On the left side is a small description of the problem and the solution. On the right is a grid of six images that explain the process in a clear step-by-step manner. This no-nonsense, elegant approach gives a two-minute answer to perplexing tasks like "how to open a wine bottle" or "how to sew a button". Something you might spend an hour googling.

This book is ideal for college students or anyone looking for effective tips to making their everyday and occasional tasks a breeze. And underneath it all, the book packs a lot of subtle and laugh-out humor. There is a page on doing card tricks and making paper planes. You can't survive college without that.

Great Book

You can't teach them everything.

This book is a quick reference to the common things that a young person may need in life. I personally love the basic cooking and dress portions, sometimes I feel that not many people know how to cook or iron a shirt. This book covers everything one might need to survive, from setting your dinner table to changing a tire. The graphic illustrations make it easy to read and understand, which made it a good choice to buy for my brother who is in college.

In a nutshell, fun, well illustrated, and full of great information.

Excellent YA WWII fiction

James Holland is a historian and writer: he's written some historical WWII fiction before - most notably his Jack Tanner series - but this is his first novel aimed at a YA market. To an extent, the retreat to Dunkirk has been fertile ground for Holland: he's written on it as a large part of his Battle of Britain, a Jack Tanner novel (Darkest Hour), and now this, with a name a little bit like a FPS and crosshairs on the cover.

The protagonist here - not quite a hero, not yet - is a 16 year old Johnny Hawke, fighting for the BEF in the defence of Cassel and the retreat to Dunkirk. Its well told horrors of war stuff: you can't say things are glamourised and sanitised, and Holland is writing historically accurate fiction here, for all young Hawke (and his mentor, Sgt Spears) find themselves in the thick of the action and always make it through. But characters - even friends - die or are captured, and there is always some doubt about who will make it and who wont.

I'm not a 13 year old boy anymore, but if I was I would really love the book. Even as a man more or less grown, I can say it's a fast fun read. Having read Holland's fiction before, about the only concession to YA I can see is that Hawke and Spears don't smoke. Its not dumbed down in any way and the vocabulary on show is wide and impressive. If you want to get a young (or even not so young) boy reading, this is probably a pretty good way to go.

A good read which has me awaiting the next release

Overall a very good book. The previous review mentions this is similar to the Jack Tanner series which has me keeping an eye out for it. Basically this is primarily from the point of view of a young soldier who lied about his age to get into his fathers regiment and emulate his hero father (WWI) and friend. His story places him in the days right before the evacuation of Dunkirk as part of a holding force left to slow down the German advance. The story does jump from character to character and point of view on occasion but I believe this provided additional perspective for the reader and enhanced the storyline, especially if you consider this POV was local to the situation of this particular unit. There was only a limited attempt to keep the reader appraised of what was occurring outside of their immediate situation, at a strategic level, we learn events as the characters do. I liked the point of view of young Johnny Hawke and how he is forced to .... "grow up" and face the realities of war and how it wears down and wastes men. His early reactions to his first maimed body, the first time he is forced to kill and how he continues to believe he must prove himself make for an interesting character. The author does a good job providing some suspense when he introduces the history of young Johnny and his platoon Sergeant and the reasons for their interaction.
The only reason I give this 4 stars vs. 5 is the authors need to have Johnny involved in several different situations to help his character evolve. This is not a bad thing but there were quite a few of these events. I have to give credit to Mr. Holland though, he did not give into the temptation to make Johnny some kind of superhero, that is left to Sgt. Spears who in the end proves to be more believable than I originally gave him credit for. A good point for this book was the author's ability to flesh out characters and then teach us the chance of war and killing them off. Periphery characters have depth of their own, actually perhaps more than Johnny does initially, but then he grows as the novel progresses.
I've always enjoyed reading the British perspective of the war, something available to me living in Scotland in the '70's; unfortunately, this genre has been out of reach for me until now and therefore I eagerly await the chance to read more about Johnny and hopefully Jack Tanner if comes available.

A good account of the bravery of British soldiers during the later part of the Battle of Framce. Very similar to the Jack Tanner series by James Holland which is not yet available to US based Kindle users.

It's the money stupid

Sorry. I'm a big Holly Bush fan but this story is just dumb. Jolene 's husband has just died and he has left most of his 50 million dollars to his out of wedlock child. Poor Jolene has to struggle by on a mere $75000 a year. Which for her would have been a comedown it's true but how did he wind up with 50 mil. He had basically been a clerk in her father's bank when he married her. He still worked for her father. She is supposed to be pretty clever. I found it hard to believe that her father didn't have some financial restrictions in place to protect her.

Then there is the hero who has been widowed 10 years. He wants to be a senator in Texas. He is educated and from a good Boston family but has gone to Texas and made his fortune in oil and cattle. He thinks he should get a wife for political reasons and to help make a lady out of his 12 year old tomboy daughter. So his sister suggests Jolene. Jolene is no dummy . She says she'll do it but wants 20 million dollars up front. So dumbo sends her 20 million and marries her by proxy sight unseen. Doesn't even ask for a picture. Seriously. TWENTY MILLION DOLLARS. Mind you this is in 1891. God only knows what that would be in today's dollars.

Even if Jolene had been likable. Which she isn't. Why would the H do such a thing. I don't care how busy you are you'd want to have a conversation with someone you intended to marry. Especially if your looking for a role model for your daughter. This was not some poor rancher ordering a mail order bride this was a rich Texan with more money then brains. Granted his sister recommended her but how many brothers take their sisters advice about picking a wife. Though if they did it would make holiday dinners a lot more enjoyable.

If snarky heroines who never smile or eye rolling gives you a headache you may want to skip this one.

Another Winner From Holly Bush

We first meet Jolene Crawford Crenshaw in Holly Bush's debut Crawford Family book, Train Station Bride. Jolene was the utterly mean sister to heroine Julia. How does an author take a character who was so disliked and turn her into a heroine? Well, Holly Bush knows the secret, and she does so in the second epic tale of the Crawford Family, Contract to Wed.

It's now Boston, 1891, and socialite Jolene Crawford Crenshaw has become a widow. She has already suffered loss that has made her bitter, but to be insulted further by her deceased husband's will, Jolene must make a choice, stay in Boston and be ridiculed by her malicious mother and by society, or to start over elsewhere.

Wealthy Texas Rancher, Maximilian Shelby has been a widower for sometime, his beloved wife died, leaving him with a small daughter to raise and now that the spitfire, Madeline is almost thirteen, Max needs someone to take his daughter into hand and also assist him in his political aspirations to become Senator. When his sister, Eugenia, who lives in Boston, tells him about the misfortunes that have befallen the widowed Jolene, he marries her by proxy after agreeing to a long list of demands that the irksome Jolene has sent him.

When Jolene arrives in her new town and meets her new husband for the first time, she is pleasantly surprised Max is so amiable and handsome. She is not happy, however, to find that the daughter, who she believed was of a marriageable age, to be only twelve. Jolene has no intention of being a mother again, not after suffering the terrible loss that holds heavily on her heart.

Max sees the beautiful and sophisticated, Jolene and immediately feels a twinge of attraction to her. Even after his pledge to never love again after his Melissa passed away, Max can't help but see the possibilities of growing his relationship with Jolene. But Jolene tries desperately to hold Max to a distance. She is after all, a product of the cold and demeaning Boston upbringing in the Crawford household. Nary a word of praise passed from her mother's lips in the time she spent with her parents. Then she went to her first husband's home, discovering a betrayal that forever changed the way she felt about him. Even with his death, the joke was on her when he leaves the bulk of his millions to her sister, Julia's child, cementing the betrayal once suffered.

Now, Jolene finally has a chance to start anew, but because of her past, she can't take at face value what is right in front of her. She constantly looks for reasons to dwell on the sorrow and the loss, instead of grasping the good. Max, the ever patient husband, knows Jolene has suffered greatly, although he doesn't know all her secrets, he is willing to put his past behind him and solidify his new family. Will these star-crossed lovers find their way? Read Contract to Wed, by Holly Bush to find out.

Well I guess you all can gather from my review, I simply love this book. I can honestly admit that I have never been let down by one word that Holly Bush has ever written. Ms. Bush's writing is solid and fraught with emotion. Taking a much hated character and turning the tides on her is an undertaking that Holly Bush has done with success. Max and the menagerie of colorful characters in his Hacienda, makes Contract to Wed a story not to be missed.

Amazing transformation..

I have to admit that I wasn't looking forward to this character's story. If you read the first book, you'll know why and by the way...read that first!

Quick summary
At the end of the first book, Boston socialite Jolene was married to Turner Crenshaw and the mother of three-year old William. When this story begins, she's lost both of them, is facing a serious change in her financial situation and is trying to determine her next direction. When she learns Maxmillian Shelby, a wealthy Texas rancher and oilman, is looking for a wife to help him prepare for a political state-wide office run and is willing to pay handsomely, Jolene jumps at the opportunity.

About Jolene
Jolene is beautiful, socially skilled and exceptionally bright. What she isn't is very nice. She's aloof but polite; emotionally barren but fully attentive; and, not interested in a committed relationship with her husband but is committed to his goals. Max is at first a bit unsettled when he meets his new wife but it doesn't take him long to figure out she's been sorely damaged.

What I loved
I loved the journey Max and Jolene took for her to confront her past, accept who she really is, acknowledge her grief and reach out to those who respected and admired her, in spite of her distance. Max is pretty wonderful and his patience with her was admirable. Unraveling Jolene's past was heart-wrenching and once revealed, brought me to tears.

The bottom line
This is a really special story that transformed my opinion of a pretty unpleasant character whose true spirit rose from the ashes. The romance is wonderful, passionate and inspired. I loved this story and the set up for the next book is intriguing.

Great book, but you better know your ratios

This is a great book and I've not worked as closely with it as my other books on pattern making. Stretch fabric is another whole animal altogether. However I like using stretch fabrics and am picking up a lot of great and important information when considering pattern drafting. It is vital to consider the pattern structure so that you don't get any loose gapes the wrong ratio of stretch. Stretch fabric is quite forgiving which is why it is fun to use, This book starts with the basic knowledge base which I found helped me tremendously. It made me feel comfortable and confident to start digging in and trying out my hand at drafting pieces. This is not for a person who doesn't know how to sew, or who does not understand pattern construction. There is a sequence of construction that your brain works through when you see the odd shapes and sizes of the various pattern pieces. Sometimes it is an engineering feat, making and constructing designs. I am very grateful for this book. Remember to make sure that you may need to use the metric system when usiing books that were written by authors in Europe. Other than that go for it! Enjoy!

Beware!

Beware! There are several inaccuracies in this book starting with stretch reduction tables on page 77- mostly mathematical errors. Some errors are random but some are in the entire table. I called the the publisher (Fairchild) and they are aware of the problem but I'm wondering why it's not recalled! Shame on you Fairchild!

Design and Patternmaking for Stretch Fabrics

This book was assigned as our college text book for working with knits. It is horrible. There are typos, gramatical errors and other mistakes on what feels like every page. It is not possible to follow the directions as per the book if you do not already have a backround in drafting, for example there are missing instrutions.
