Long before he thought about becoming a musician, William Basie, son of a Red Bank, N.J., coachman and caretaker, longed to "go on the road touring everywhere in the world of show business with a troupe." In these long, rambling memoirs, skillfully put together from tape recordings, the Count recollects his experiences as a traveling pianist in Missouri and Oklahoma, as a member (with Hot Lips Page and Jimmie Rushing) of the Blue Devils, as organist in a silent-movie house, with Bennie Moten's orchestra in Kansas City, and as leader of one of the greatest jazz bands of all time. Basie pays tribute to his colleagues and managers (and to John Hammond for "discovering" him), but does not hesitate to discuss their weaknesses and shortcomings; his language is direct and earthy. Murray compiled this biography from conversations with Basie, who died in 1984. Basie is the narrator looking back at his first jobs playing piano in Red Bank, New Jersey; his performances with Bennie Moten's Orchestra in Kansas City; and his fame as a big band leader from the Thirties to the Eighties. Basie's entertaining memories of his early days of performing in movie theaters and sleeping in pool halls give a more colorful picture of life as a musician in the Thirties than would a conventional history or biography. His chronicle of later years of successful worldwide performances seems commonplace in comparison. Basie laughs at his own motives and foibles and reasonably and modestly assesses his talent in a colloquial style that makes this appealing portrait a valuable record of a personality and an age. Count Basie autobiography

I'm a big Count Basie fan and think "Good Morning Blues" is an excellent book about jazz. Basie talks about the clubs and theater gigs he played throughout his career from the very beginning to the high points of his career. He tells about the musicians who were in the many bands including, The Blue Devils, The Bennie Moten Band, and the Basie band, including many of the early theatrical groups he played for and toured with. It includes his early upbringing in Red Bank, NJ, and his effort to move up to better musical groups. He tells the stories of how poor he and his friends were including the time he and a fellow musician had to sleep in a pool hall and swiped bread from a bakery cart in order to eat. Later on he tells about making the move from Bennie Moten's band to forming his own band after the death of Bennie. He doesn't really dwell on discrimination but does tell a few stories concerned with the hard life for "sepia" musicians. He tells about his early mentor John Hammond from Columbia Records who helped promote Basie throughout his career. Also there are many stories of other musicians who played in clubs. It's a very positive book about jazz with very few disparaging remarks about other people. He tells about other musicians who he looked up to, especially other pianists; very little gossip but plenty of good stories about musicians and what happened during musical engagements. Basie says he was not a strong music reader and there is not a lot of music theory discussed. It is such a warm and positive book, you end up liking his music even more.

The Count Speaks

The book gave me some insight into the always-cool minimalist pianist who led the greatest and most dynamic of big bands. Though there is too much diary-like listing of the band's road schedule, still the Count discusses many of the musicians who drove the band and made it the wonder it was through all the years from its beginning in Kansas City through and beyond the "atomic" years. Modest and self-effacing, the Count expresses his admiration of all the great musical figures he encountered and gives credit generously. A good man fronting a great aggregation. The book enhanced my appreciation of all the Basie albums I own and caused me to acquire another five.

How Did They Do It?

How did Albert Murray and Dan Morgenstern manage to write an uninteresting and at times boring book about the great Count Basie? This is a sanitized and unemotional look at Basie's career. It is full of details that can only be of interest to a Basie historian- and that's about the only good thing you can say about it. I guess The Count wanted it that way. If you want to read everything about Basie that's ever been written, then buy this book. Otherwise, skip it.

About the Author
Gene Luen Yang began drawing comic books in the fifth grade. In 1997, he received a Xeric Grant for Gordon Yamamoto and the King of the Geeks, his first comics work. He has since written and drawn a number of titles, including Level Up and Prime Baby. American Born Chinese, his first graphic novel from First Second, was a National Book Award finalist, as well as the winner of the Printz Award and an Eisner Award. He also won an Eisner for The Eternal Smile, a collaboration with Derek Kirk Kim.

Spoiler Free Review - mild content warning

My husband, my son, and I are all huge Avatar fans. Huge fans. This manga installment undertakes to answer one of the major hanging threads left at the end of the anime series, and as The Search gets underway, we get some surprising bits of back story and new insights on old favorites (or maybe not so favorites).

I really do not want to spoil this story for anyone and do not want to spoil the stories from the anime for anyone who might be just getting into the show, but, briefly, Zuko needs help with a family matter and enters a surprising alliance.

The book ends with an excellent cliffhanger.

Parents should be aware that in this book, there is kissing. And mild violence. And an issue that involves an implied sexual relationship.

Other than that, the book is well-written, beautifully drawn, and within reading/vocabulary/maturity levels of about 4th grade and up.

Picks up right where we left off...

FYI: I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley for purposes of review. (I read that one, and then went out the day it arrived in stores, bought a hard copy and read it again.)

Premise: The war is over, but bringing peace to the Four Nations isn't as simple as winning a battle. This is the continuing story of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

I LOVE THIS. I loved this to pieces. This made me laugh and gasp and cry aloud. I love these characters, and this is completely in tone with the series: funny and sweet and heartbreaking.

It even starts by devoting three pages to the voiceover that opened every episode of the series, so it dropped me immediately into the right mindset for this world. I can hear the voice actors in my head. If you haven't seen Avatar: The Last Airbender, GO DO THAT. And then when you get to the end and want more, you're in luck!

The Promise interweaves some of the character moments we saw at the end of the last episode into the start of a new story, in which Zuko and Aang struggle with the Fire Nation colonies that were established in the Earth Kingdom during the war. It becomes a difficult question: what is the best thing to do, for those people who live there and for the Nations as a whole? How long have they been there? Are they Fire Nation citizens? Earth Kingdom citizens? What about the Earth Kingdom people who are angry, who lost people in the war, who want every Firebender gone? There are no easy answers for the characters.

There are plenty of great character moments, from an early conversation between Aang and Zuko that introduces the core emotional plot and had me right by the heartstrings, to the sweet moments showing the development of Aang and Katara's relationship. Toph and Sokka meanwhile maintain the right amount of comic relief to keep the tone on balance. Plenty of characters get at least a cameo, but there are occasional subtle words or references to keep the reader on track in case you forget who someone is.

You know the next element that's needed for Avatar: action! And this doesn't disappoint. The fight scenes are gorgeous: clear, dynamic, and inventive.

The art is beautiful throughout, in fact. Mostly just true to the series, although I especially liked the addition of Aang's prayer beads containing all the symbols of the elements, that he apparently uses to talk to the previous Avatars. The design work on that was beautifully done, and there are little elements to the art that I only noticed on a second look, little details that just enhance the whole.

This is a medium-short graphic novel at 76 Pages.

Be warned, this ends in a cliffhanger! And I have to wait until MAY for Part 2?

Shallow Story with Unrecognizable Characters, fails to live up to the animated series.

"Avatar: The Last Airbender" is one of the best animated series that have ever been produced for television. While intended for, and accessible to, kids and preteens, the story and characters have a depth to them that has created a dedicated cult fanbase. People of all ages have become enamored of the series, from animation connoisseurs to followers of good action adventure. Although the live action movie adaptation failed to live up to its inspiration on many, many levels, the first official comic book continuation of the series looked to be in better hands. The series' original creators, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, were involved in creating the story, and the award-winning graphic novelist Gene Luen Yang was handling the scripting duties.

Sadly, "The Promise, Part 1" fails to live up to its pedigree in multiple ways. To detail why, I'll be spoiling much of the story below.

The animated series ended with the defeat of the conquest-happy Fire Nation, thanks to the combined efforts of Avatar Aang and his former enemy, the Firebender Zuko. Zuko was made Fire Lord in place of his evil father, and the pair were set to build a new, lasting peace in the wake of the war. "The Promise" looks at the first hurdle in this process, dealing the fate of the Fire Nation Colonies in the Earth Kingdom. At the very beginning of the story, we already see signs that "The Promise" is aiming far below the mark set by its predecessor. The animated series was careful to show that, while most of the plot and changes in the world were being driven by a handful of heroic individuals, the world they inhabited was both vast and complex. There were good and bad people on every side of the war, and much of the trouble was the result of people working at cross-purposes for one reason or another. While "The Promise" looks to focus on the political side of things, the complexity of the animated series' story is nowhere to be found. The original fate of the colonies is decided in a quick scene at the beginning of the comic, where everyone decides to give the colonies back to the Earth Kingdom after a five-minute conversation between the main cast. A full year passes before the effects of this decision are seen, when the colonists themselves strike back to declare that after a hundred years of war, they have created their own culture and don't wish to be split between the old Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom. Had the story focused on this aspect, I wouldn't have any complaints, but things are quickly side-tracked.

Much was made, in the animated series, of the characters of Aang and Zuko. The former was a gentle monk who resisted the call to kill the old Fire Lord, while the latter was an honorable atoner who wanted to do his best to repair the damage of his nation's war of conquest. Yet, the first conversation between these two in "The Promise" seem to depict vastly different characters. Zuko is obsessed with the idea that the stress of being Fire Lord will turn him as evil as his father, Ozai, was, even though the animated series clearly shows that Ozai was sick enough to be willing to kill his own firstborn in exchange for being named Crown Prince. Fire Lord Ozai poisoned his own people in order to feed his war machine, and was willing to burn the whole Earth Kingdom and commit genocide against its people, rather than deal with their rebellions. So Zuko asks Aang to kill him if he ever turns this evil, despite already demonstrating an ability tell right from wrong. In fact, this is the whole basis of Zuko's story arc in the animated series, as he discovers that his father and nation don't share his sense of honor, and ultimately sacrifices his station to fight against them. Aang, even though much was made in the animated series' epic finale of his reverence for life and belief that even the worst people should not be killed as an answer to their crimes, quickly agrees to this.

From there, the entire political plot of the colonies is turned into an excuse to create tension between Zuko and Aang, to the point that the plot tries to draw its suspense from the possibility that Aang will kill Zuko for his reluctance to forge ahead with their hastily-conceived plan to deport the colonists back to the Fire Nation. The characters take inexplicable action to make themselves look as bad as possible, rush into battle at perceived slights, and show a reluctance to talk things through. This aren't the characters from the animated series, who felt so real to fans that thousands of them waged passionate internet debates about their speculative love lives. These aren't the characters who impressed critics like Roger Ebert, and led them to decry the shallow recreations of them in M Night Shyamalan's live action adaptation.

Fans of the Avatar franchise, though, have probably already heard the details of the upcoming sequel series, "The Legend of Korra." Taking place a generation later, the basic premise of this new series has already spoiled the ending to "The Promise," letting readers know that without a doubt, the colony situation will be resolved and Aang will not kill Zuko. In fact, from all the details that have been released by such events as Nickelodeon's official San Diego Comic Con panel, once the two characters are no longer being twisted by this cash-in of a story, they quickly go back to being good friends who know how to work together.

Other problems with the book include tin-eared dialogue, short length that is made worse by fight-sequences that speed along across multiple pages without any tension, and art that seeks to copy the look of the original series without capturing the beauty and detail of the truly fantastic animation.

As a comic, "The Promise" is very much in the tradition of any number of licensed spin-offs, looking to make a quick buck off the popularity of the original property. Undiscerning fans will probably be pleased, but the wider audience created by "Avatar: The Last Airbender" will be greatly disappointed.

Weeknight Paleo Rocks

For those of you that view food preparation as less of an art form and more as a means to tasty nutrition, Amber Beam's Weeknight Paleo is for you. It is simply outstanding - it is outstanding because Amber has focused her attention on helping the reader solve the common problem of how to quickly and simply put great Paleo food on the table night after night. With an eye towards thriftiness, Amber has created recipes that are perfect for everyday and enjoyable by the entire family.

Recipes are organized as 4 dinners per week over a total of 9 weeks with a shopping list provided at the start of each section. And each recipe has an amazing photograph of the complete dish - for me this is a must-have as the visualization helps me know if I am arriving at the correct preparation destination.

This cookbook definitely hits the mark and I highly recommend it!

At this point, I have a lot of Paleo cookbooks, most of which feature a huge number of exactly the same recipes as all of the other cookbooks. I mean, how many frittata recipes do I really need?

But I really liked the premise of this book, that weeknight dinners don't have to be a big pain to prepare. That's been one of the most difficult parts about eating healthy for me, is that sometimes I simply don't feel like I have the time to create multiple dishes when I'm already arriving home late and hungry.

Many of the recipes rely on using leftovers from the night before to have a shortcut in the evening's dinner prep, while still feeling like you're eating something new and fresh. I love this idea, since this is how so many of us actually cook. We have a little bit of leftover something, and we combine it with some new foods to have a totally different meal even though we're eating leftovers.

The author does a number of things really well. Her presentation is spectacular, and she manages to make a number of dishes with familiar ingredients seem unusual and exciting just through the way she stacks or chops the ingredients. For example, the carnitas-style taco tower combines avocado cream, leftover pulled pork, and coleslaw into an adorable circular tower which makes it feel like a gourmet feast.

Then, there's the Asian five spice chicken with matchsticks salad. While putting a spice crust on some chicken and having it with vegetables on the side would seem like a pretty boring meal, the fact that she cut the salad into matchsticks and provided a fun recipe for homemade Paleo Szechuan sauce made the whole thing come together and seem like a truly exciting feast.

I also adored her creativity on the open faced steak sammich with bacon and caramelized onions. My first thought when reading the recipe title was that anything called a sandwich better have a bun of some kind. I am so tired of people telling me I ought to be happy eating my burger or sandwich ingredients plain on a plate. I mean, I do eat plain burgers all the time, but that's hardly something you need a recipe book for. However, the author didn't disappoint, and she set her delicious looking steak sandwich on a bed of celery root. How creative is that? Once she topped it with delicious steak strips sautéed in a balsamic glaze and topped it with bacon, I can't imagine any Paleo eater who wouldn't be excited to dig in.

I also love how the author states the active prep time, and active cook time (such as for marinading) and the cook time so that you can really figure out what you have the patience and time for that evening. If you're a savvy cook and have all the ingredients handy, I think that her prep and cook estimates are fairly accurate.

The book is divided into a series of weeks, so that you can have an easy meal plan, if desired, for nine weeks of dinner. I personally don't like to use meal plans, and prefer just knowing that I can flip through the book and choose whatever sounds good on any given night. However, I know many people pay for Paleo meal plans to be emailed to them, and if that's you, I think that this book would be an excellent investment. I can't imagine tiring of the simple yet innovative and delicious foods the author presents. The book is also packed full of photographs, so I felt I could see as well as read about the results of every meal.

Overall, you can see there's a great variety in terms of the meats and vegetables chosen, the ethnic inspirations for each meal, and the different flavors she offers up in every given week. I also loved that this can be used by gluten-free eaters, Paleo eaters, or people avoiding specific foods such as grains or dairy. Because the people in my family all have different tastes and needs, it's great to know that I can pick anything out of this cookbook and everybody can eat it. Many of the foods are even Whole 30 compliant, in case you're doing a Whole 30. You can always eliminate the sauces or just remove the sugar from any recipes which contain it.

5 Cool Things About Weeknight Paleo

Full disclosure: I wrote the foreword for Amber's book because I think she and her book are pretty terrific.

1. Amber is a paleo devotee, but not the food police.
In her introduction, Amber shares that she strives for 95% compliance with her paleo habits and spends lots of time in the 85% area. That's real life and real success. In her first 30 days of eating paleo, she lost 10 pounds, reduced her acid reflux, slept soundly, and got compliments from strangers on her glowing skin.

2. Think bistro food!
Get a load of these recipes: Eggplant Napoleon, Fusion Lasagna (looks like lasanga, tastes like a burrito!), Thai Pork Meatballs, Chorizo Fajitas, and Chicken in Tarragon Mustard Sauce. It's the imagination and flavor of restaurant food, except it tastes even better and it's 100% paleo.

3. Enjoy the genius of This, Then That.
Amber's included instructions for how to turn one ingredient into two distinct meals. As she explains, "What starts in the refrigerator as four steaks becomes Surf and Turf the first night and Spicy Steak Stir Fry later in the week." I have no problem eating the same thing for days (weeks?) on end, but I know most people go bonkers eating the same old-same old, so This, Then That is a neat trick for appeasing kids, significant others, and roommates that complain about boring leftovers.

A Great Beginners Guide

Wow, I wish they had a book like this when I started fish keeping. I think there would be fewer fish in heaven if I had a book this informative. From tank choice to maintenance, the 12 weeks this book covers is jam packed with practical information. This book includes helpful information on plants, filters, fish choice, fish diseases and much more. The step-by-step photos are great and extremely easy to follow. The information is timeless and very well done.

This is a great gift for anyone who has or wants to get a fish tank.

THE best general freshwater aquarium reference I've read.

This is a great and complete reference for the beginning to experienced aquarist. Excellent photos demonstrate what the text explains. The author not only introduces the more difficult technical procedures for keeping an aquarium, but clearly explains how to implement them and the natural processes they affect. I also particularly enjoyed that the author frequently discusses the latest innovations and equipment for the home aquarium. If there was one book for the aquarist that I would recommend, it would be this one.

Great book! Perfect for the beginner.

After a ten year break I decided to get back into aquarium keeping. I knew the basics but I was a little rusty on all the details. This book was a perfect refresher course on all of the intricacies of keeping a tropical aquarium - and I learnt a ton of new stuff too. I am setting up a 10 gallon quarantine tank (in my office) and a 29 gallon display tank (in the living room). I have followed this book page by page and a few weeks later my tanks are ready to accept fish - yes, I'm going shopping this weekend!

The author covers every aspect of setting up a new tank. Filters, lighting, substrate, food, you name it - it's all here. The explanation about the critical subject of water chemistry is the best I've read anywhere. There's also a ton of info about plants if you want to get into that side of things. He then goes on to recommend the most appropriate kinds of fish for each stage in the development of your new aquarium - all great information from someone who clearly knows what he's talking about.

The book itself is full color, with lots of graphs and charts to hold your interest. The photographs are excellent.

So, all in all, a great reference for the beginner. Highly recommended. Glad I bought it.
