About the Author
Robert Hughes has been an art critic for Time magazine since 1970. His eight-part BBC/Time-Life television series, on which this book is based, has been broadcast throughout the United States on public television. He has received the Franklin Jewett Mather Award for Distinguished Criticism from the College Art Association of America twice, and he has authored the Art of Australia (1966); Heaven and Hell in Western Art (1969); and Nothing If Not Critical (1990), a collection of essays on art and artists.

More than an art book, by more than an art critic

I bought and read the first edition of this book after seeing the 1979 PBS series Hughes hosted, and I heartily recommend both book (which I still have) and the TV show if you can find it anywhere. Hughes' special brilliance is his ability to show the revolution in art at the turn of the 20th century as reacting to the revolution in technology and living standards and the rapid changes in every part of society -- the "shock" of this race to "newnesss" that really starting picking up speed a hundred years ago. Also unique and priceless is Hughes' puckish sense of humor and willingness to express an opinion - even a negative opinion - about art and architectural movements.
This is art history for the intelligent nonartist -- you will greatly enjoy it!

Superb, sensible introduction to modern art for the curious

Robert Hughes manages to do what no other contemporary critics can, see painting as a painter does, rather than as a writer--writing about painting. As someone who makes my living as a painter, I'm always frustrated by the clueless interpretations of art historians and especially critics. Often, they simply don't get it! They're looking for philosophic meaning in every nuance of a painting, when any honest painter would tell you, sometimes "It's just because it looked good like that!" I would highly recommend Mr. Hughes's book. It is a very sensible, insightful, and readable text. As a painter, I was very impressed by his observations and how he managed to communicate some idea of how painters actually create their work. (Critics would have you believe they start with a manifesto/theory/or other B.S. It's usually a lot less mysterious than that and Hughes does a great job of demystifying it. Also, it's a great book to show someone the purpose and value of art since 1900. Great Book!

Valuable for the curious and the more experienced

This is a famous art text and justly so. If you are wondering "just what is this modern art stuff?", this book will help you. If you are thinking "I don't know much about art but I know what I like" this book will surprise you with its magnificent colour plates and images. Robert Hughes can write reviews for the art glitterati, but he can also write for the average person with an interest in Modern Art, and very well he does it too!

Bill Jelen , Excel MVP and the host of MrExcel.com, has been using spreadsheets since 1985, and he launched the MrExcel.com website in 1998. Tracy Syrstad is a developer for the MrExcel consulting team. She was introduced to Excel VBA by a co-worker who encouraged her to learn VBA by recording steps, and then modifying the code as needed. A little disappointed...

I bought this book to improve my VBA for Excel skills for a specific work-related project. Bill Jelen knows the most efficient means to write VBA for Excel...no argument there...and there's a lot of sample code, plus video as well...but I never hit that point where I got excited with my progress like I do with many of the other tech books. To be fair I think VBA for Excel is challenging for any author to teach and truly reach people. I was a bit disappointed with this read...so I ended up leaning on a book by John Walkenbach...Excel 2013 Power Programming with VBA. I found this book to be more helpful for me in understanding VBA syntax.

You won't find a more advanced book out there. There are books as good as this one, but this is for expert level users only while the others will be useful for intermediate or beginners.

There is a lot of good stuff on the web but this brings together a lot valuable examples that you do not need to hunt for

A fine book on advanced Excel topics

I wish I'd found this book sooner. It is very clearly and authoritatively written about various advanced topics. There is a thorough discussion of the "Advanced Filter" feature and also of user forms. Examples were carefully selected to illustrate various features without using an excessive amount of data to clutter things. However, just from the title, it should be expected that this book is not intended for those with little or no prior knowledge of spreadsheets and Excel. This book has been more useful to me than one with "Bible" in its title.

A really good start.

Actually, I'd give this book 10 stars but 5 is Amazon's limit.
I especially think Joe Cross’ allowing for family dinners in the five-day reboot protocol that he talks about here solves one of the BIG problems with a Reboot—or a pre-Reboot as the case is here. To be sure, this program is a start. As I write this I’m on day 13 of such a reboot, minus dinners. ‘Abandoning’ most of the stuff on a standard American diet is hard. The fact is, what most people eat is basically garbage. Joe’s program provides and excellent start to both getting a whole lot of nutrients and of pursuing a more focused reboot; and you might even lose a little weight, too. The bottom line is to move towards a diet that is 90% fruits, herbs, sprouts and vegetables. The other 10% is mostly inconsequential. Sadly, most people’s diet is 10% fruits, herbs, sprouts and vegetables and the rest is junk.
This book provides an excellent means to start to reverse that process. Above all else, critical to everyone's diet is to drink at least three glasses of fresh juice made from fruits and vegetables. For anyone so inclined, my own personal journey is available, as it develops, at [...]
Big kudos to Joe for being a pioneer it a time when the world desperately needs to know the way back to optimal health.

Good book for starting into juicing

This is a pared down book with different recipes than his Reboot with Joe book, which I also have. It has great info, so a good introduction to juicing as Joe has done it. I suggest it if you just want two options - juice only for 5 days, or juice all day with a dinner (recipes included) for 5 days. Shopping lists are included, recipes for all juices included. Probably a good book to start with if you're not sure you want to dive into the bigger book.

Great book, poor website

The book had all the basics I'd hoped for and is an easy read! I've jumped right into my reboot with a trip to the store, thanks to the shopping list! The recipes from Day 1 were soooo much better than I thought they'd be. Daily tips and what to expect were very helpful.
The only disappointment were all the great references to Joe's website, only to discover a page with TONS of pop-ups! Wait 15 seconds before clicking on anything, or click on what you want to see really fast, before you end up on another page. I couldn't find the article I wanted to read.
I will probably get the recipe book next.

Interesting fictional book on English soccer

Jon Sammels was considered a tragic figure in the 1960’s and early 1970’s English Premier League soccer, a tremendously talented player who was left off the 1970 World Cup team for England. His story is brought back to life by a television producer who must make a documentary as part of his job. Samuels’ story as well as that of the fictional “Mr. Arsenal” (named for his favorite English Premier team) is told in this entertaining book by James Durose-Rayner.

While initially the reader will believe he or she will be reading a biography of Sammels, it becomes clear early in the book that the story is really about Mr. Arsenal. He can be considered a tragic figure himself, as he is about to divorce his wife, will break up with his girlfriend and will get another woman pregnant. How this part of the book plays out was what grabbed my attention in this novel and frankly, I felt his story was much more interesting than that of Sammels.

This is not to criticize Durose-Rayner’s writing about Sammels, done through the eyes of Mr. Arsenal as he does the research on “Sammy” to produce his documentary. The writing about not only Sammy but the entire political scene of soccer at that time is top-notch and fans will really enjoy the vivid descriptions of Sammy’s spectacular plays and goals while Mr. Arsenal tries to not only do his job but make sense of his personal life as well.

No matter which part grabs your attention – the soap opera life of Mr. Arsenal or the great story of Sammy – this book is a fun read that will require a considerable amount of time to complete. However, it is well worth that time, especially if the reader wants to learn about a player who is sadly forgotten when the discussion revolves around great English soccer players.

This encyclopedia joins Bohdan S. Wynan's Dictionary of American Library Biography (Professional Reading, LJ 9/1/78) and Donald G. Davis Jr.'s American Library History: A Comprehensive Guide to the Literature (Professional Reading, LJ 3/ 1/90) as essential reference tools for the study of library history. It is, however, much broader in scope, both geographically and chronologically. Edited by two prominent U.S. library historians, the volume contains articles by more than 200 contributors from three dozen countries. The work is organized in a standard one-volume encyclopedia format with alphabetically arranged articles, cross references, brief bibliographies, and a detailed index. The essays are basically of two types: geographical and subject. The geographical articles survey libraries in particular countries or regions. They also profile more than 50 major libraries worldwide. A small sample of the great variety of entries includes: Hans H. Wellisch's "Alexandrian Library"; Mary Niles Maack's "Gender Issues in Librarianship"; and Ellis Mount's "Scientific and Technical Libraries." While editors must have been tempted at times to limit the work to U.S. library history, the broad coverage makes the encyclopedia a rich source of information on the historical role of the library in society in diverse times and places. While this volume will appeal primarily to the librarian or library school student, there is a fair amount of material here to interest the general reader. Recommended for library science collections and large general reference collections.

International in scope and covering library history from Babylonian clay tablets to MEDLINE, the articles here range from 200 to 6,000 words. The emphasis is on the historical, but there is much information on libraries in the present day. There is a wonderful article on the history of the concept of alphabetical order, along with interesting entries on the Anglo-American Cataloging Code, subject headings, OCLC, gays and lesbians, gender and racial issues in library history, and USIA libraries. The longer entries tend to be on types of libraries (Medical Libraries, Theological Libraries), library functions (Reference Services, Collection Development), or historical periods (Medieval Libraries). There are entries for 60 important libraries around the world, some of which, such as the American Antiquarian Society and the Boston Public Library, are not in the new third edition of the World Encyclopedia of Library and Information Services [RBB Ja 1 94]. All articles are signed by their authors, who represent many different countries, and all conclude with bibliographies. Finding aids in the Encyclopedia of Library History include a classified list of articles at the beginning of the book and an index at the end.

How else does this work differ from the World Encyclopedia? Its more than 80 articles on countries of the world are briefer and lack the useful statistics found in the World Encyclopedia, and it lacks the biographies and photographs found in that volume. While it doesn't entirely take the place of the larger World Encyclopedia, it does provide some of the same information. A nice little book if it finds the right audience

Someone recommended this book to me and I can't remember who it was; it turn there are certain people I know to whom I would do the same, and others that I would warn off.
If you are earnestly interested in learning some practical math yet utterly uninitiated in numerical ways this may be the book for you. If, however, you are firmly stuck in your innumerate ways, I doubt that this book is compelling or shocking enough to convince you otherwise. If you are numerate, but curious about how the other half lives, you will need to manage bouts of boredom sitting in the choir while Paulos preaches. I mostly fall into the last catergory, yet I managed to find some revelations and some interesting bits here and there. Also, the author has a friendly, conversational style with a touch of irreverance -- I appreciate that.
Yet I nearly gave up on this book before I reached the halfway point, and I RARELY give up on books. What pulled me through is the author's excellent advice from the foreword: feel free to skip the bits that are too complicated for the novitiate or too obvious for the adept. A generous gift from the author -- take advantage of it and you will enjoy the book all the more. :)
This book focuses heavily on statistics although it does touch on a number of other flavors of math, including fractions and magnitudes. Still, the best concrete examples come from stats, yet I am sure that better books must exist for providing the "gee-whiz! I didn't realize what a boob I was for not realizing X, Y and Z about real life statistics" revelations that may shake the sluggish right brain of the innumerate. This book has the advantage of being thin, though, and it does fit nicely into one's pocket. ;) The book also comments on potential social factors that turn budding math whizzes into the innumerate masses -- I didn't expect it, and it is refreshing.

Must-Reading

"Innumeracy" goes beyond the expectation of a non-mathematician, user-friendly book. It wakes up your awareness of what passes as "statistics", "experts", "economics", and various numeric analysis in the popular media.

I bought the book after seeing it referenced in another science book. I was interested in a basis for how much bias, or straight ignorance, was posing in the guise of expert. I was more than satisfied with "Innumeracy" in this regard.

Read it twice. Put it down for a month, pay attention to what's in the news, etc. then read it again. You will be a much better consumer of numbers.
