Shelley Gaskin, Series Editor for the GO! Series, is a professor of business and computer technology at Pasadena City College in Pasadena, California. She holds a master's degree in business education from Northern Illinois University and a doctorate in adult and community education from Ball State University. Dr. Gaskin has 15 years of experience in the computer industry with several Fortune 500 companies and has developed and written training materials for custom systems applications in both the public and private sector. She is also the author of books on Microsoft Outlook and word processing.

Too much fluff and not enough pith

This book is currently being used as a textbook in a computer 101 class I am teaching at my local community college. This is the second time I have taught this class using this book. First, the major pros for the text: It is spiral bound so it lays flat. Chapters are in a logical order. Each MS Office application gets three chapters. Topics are presented in project format with two projects with very detailed steps - this can be a plus or a minus depending upon your point of view. There are lots of additional projects, exercises, questions, and other pedagogical features to endear it to teachers, and this book would most likely work well for the self-learner (with some caution). The publisher provides many, many resource files for the instructor and the student.

Now, for some cons.

As mentioned, each project has a great many detailed steps and lends itself well to what I call "recipe style" learning. Meaning that if you can read, you should be able to produce the desired results. However, this is the feedback I get from the majority of my students: "I am following the steps, but I don't know why I am doing them." Clearly, the concepts are being lost! No actual learning is taking place. This becomes evident if I present a short quiz on the basic concepts presented in the project. The students are getting lost because of too many detailed steps. Most of the steps say click here, pull down that, select this, and on and on. Which leads to the next major problem with this text. Most of the focus of the project steps is on the appearance of the project: pretty printing, glitz and glitter, and lots of fluff. This is not particularly surprising since Microsoft has put emphasis on those same things since about MS Office 2003. I found the chapters on Excel to be particularly bad, and to the point where I presented my own material.

Some of the problem with these projects is also the fault of the student data files for the project. Perhaps too much of the work in setting up the project is being done. If the students had to create the project from scratch, they would be more in tune with what they are trying to accomplish. In earlier courses, I created my examples that the students created from scratch, and they focused on one concept. Then I ended with a simple project that tied the concepts together.

Finally, a few words to the self-learner: The good news is that you will not need an instructor to use this book. The steps are reasonably clear with only minor differences between the book and the actual Office application being used. The bad news is that you will need to study the project carefully in order to pull out the actual concepts that are going to be important to remember in order to use MS Office applications with any degree of expertise. My best advice is to go slowly, practice - practice - practice, and keep a notebook handy for keeping track of major concepts learned.

By analyzing previously secret archival documents, obscure objects, and political pamphlets, Daniel Leese traces the tumultuous history of the cult within the Communist Party and at the grassroots level. The Party leadership's original intention was to develop a prominent brand symbol, which would compete with the nationalists' elevation of Chiang Kai-shek. They did not, however, anticipate that Mao would use this symbolic power to mobilize Chinese youth to rebel against party bureaucracy itself. The result was anarchy, and when the army was called in, it relied on mandatory rituals of worship, such as daily reading of the Little Red Book or performances of 'the loyalty dance', to restore order. Such fascinating detail sheds light not only on the personality cult of Mao, but also on hero-worship in other traditions.

A must read on the Cultural Revolution

Cultural Revolution rarely makes for dull reading, so packed it is with political twists, hidden plots, mass hysteria and jaw-dropping absurdities. Leese's exploration of Mao's personality cult is a wonderful addition to the genre. Based on extensive archival research in the PRC, and on careful examination of Maoist propaganda, this book accounts for the development of Mao worship from the late 1930s, through the trials of de-Stalinization in the 1950s and the excesses of the 1960s, until the cult was toned down after Lin Biao's demise in 1971. The most fascinating finding of the book is that, far from being necessarily imposed from above, the Mao cult - in some of its creative manifestations - was actually a grass-root phenomenon. It was moreover hijacked for political purposes and contestations by rival groups, especially during the high tide of the Cultural Revolution, leading to grave dissatisfaction not only on Mao's part but also among the members of the so called Cultural Revolution Group, who were apprehensive of losing control of the brand. The book is also simply a great read, especially in places where the author discusses some of the unusual facets of the Cult like"quotation gymnastics" and "loyalty dances." Leese's conclusion is a poignant one: "until the party finally allows for an independent assessment of Mao and opens its archives, the shadow of Mao will continue to haunt his successors."

A must read book for those with any interest in Mao

This is an essential book for anyone wishing to understand the cult of personality that arose around Mao. Leese's insightful analysis not only documents the origins of the cult (as a counterweight to that arising around Chiang Kai-Shek), but through it's many surprising manifestations (exercise regimes done while chanting revolutionary slogan) and the surprising fact that ultimately the party lost control of Mao's image and, to some degree, the cult itself and had to struggle to regain it. Replete with accounts of the many, many ways the cult was manifested this book both astounds and educates and you will finish it much more knowledgeable than when you started. The cult of Mao is part of every book about Mao and Mao's China, but none come close to giving the reader the detailed understanding of the phenomenon that one gets in this book. I read the Kindle version and it was an excellent digital conversion. No problems with garbled names, strange spacing, or any of the other problems that sometimes plague Kindle versions.

About the Author
O. C. Ferrell is Professor of Marketing and Creative Enterprise Scholar at Anderson Schools of Management, University of New Mexico. He recently served as the Bill Daniels Distinguished Professor of Business Ethics at the University of Wyoming and previously as chair of the Colorado State University Marketing Department. He has also been on the faculties of University of Memphis, Texas A&M University, and Illinois State University. He received his Ph.D. in marketing from Louisiana State University. He is past president of the Academic Council of the American Marketing Association and chaired the American Marketing Association Ethics Committee. Under his leadership, the committee developed the AMA Code of Ethics and the AMA Code of Ethics for Marketing on the Internet. He is currently a member of the advisory committee for the AMA marketing certification program. In addition, he is a former member of the Academy of Marketing Science Board of Governors and is a Society of Marketing Advances and Southwestern Marketing Association Fellow. He is the Academy of Marketing Science's Vice President of Publications. He currently serves as Marketing Ethics and Social Issues Section Editor of the JOURNAL OF MICROMARKETING. Dr. Ferrell is the co-author of 18 books and approximately 75 articles. His articles have been published in the JOURNAL OF MARKETING RESEARCH, JOURNAL OF MARKETING, JOURNAL OF BUSINESS ETHICS, JOURNAL OF BUSINESS RESEARCH, JOURNAL OF THE ACADEMY OF MARKETING SCIENCE, JOURNAL OF PUBLIC POLICY MARKETING, as well as other journals. Sally Dibb is Professor of Marketing at the Open University Business School. The Open University is the largest university in the UK, teaching over 200,000 people every year, and the UK's only university dedicated to distance learning. Lyndon Simkin is a Reader at Warwick Business School, University of Warwick, U.K. He received his Ph.D. from Bradford University. His research interests are business planning, target market prioritisation, marketing planning, implementation of effective marketing programmes, promotions management and retail marketing. He is the author of other marketing texts and his long-term consulting clients include Calor, Fujitsu, JCB, Raytheon, Royal & Sun Alliance and many retailers. William Pride (Ph.D., Louisiana State University) is a professor of marketing in the Mays Business School, Texas A&M University. In addition to this text, he is co-author of a market-leading principles of marketing book. Dr. Pride's research interests include advertising, promotion, and distribution channels, and his research articles have appeared in major professional journals, such as the Journal of Marketing, the Journal of Marketing Research, the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, and the Journal of Advertising. Dr. Pride is a member of the American Marketing Association, Academy of Marketing Science, Society for Marketing Advances, and the Marketing Management Association. He has received the Marketing Fellow Award from the Society of Marketing Advances and the Marketing Innovation Award from the Marketing Management Association. Both of these are lifetime achievement awards.

Concept of Marketing

I used this textbook last semester in my first marketing class. I didn't know much about marketing.This book explains very clearly what marketing is, and gave examples of companies that are using the marketing concept, and how it affects customers.
The Book also presents ways that you, the consumer can tell weather or not a company is using the marketing concept in order to satisy your needs.

This book sucks. It makes the basic principles of marketing more confusing by bombarding the reader with various terms and phrases with an excessive amount of overlap between them. There is no clear-cut distinction between the glossary items, making studying for bi-weekly exams a chore.

This is the way to write (and read) history. Morris gives us silly, sad and wonderful tales of real people whose characters enliven the shadow of Britain as cast across the world stage, lengthening as year succeeds to year.

This is the first of three volumes that cover the reign of Queen Victoria. We are treated to all of the stories of Empire, as the soldiers and sailors of the Queen spread out across the globe to forge a truly global sphere of influence.

History need not be dull, and Morris is proof. This and the other volumes in the trilogy are outstandingly fascinating. We are anywhere that the Sun Never Sets, among some of the most creative and eccentric people imaginable.

The entire trilogy is well worth your time and attention.

Best condensed narrative of the British Empire under Victoria

I thoroughly enjoyed Jan Morris' survey of the 19th century British Empire. Having studied this topic from numerous other sources and perspectives, I still found this to be a refreshing account, and one that tied numerous facets into a cohesive whole. While some might regard Morris as writing with too much of a pro-British bias, I did not find the lack of politically-correct 'empire-bashing' to be problematic. Indeed, Morris emphasizes the negative (and the ludicrous) right alongside the positive. In the few instances where the perspective is obviously skewed, the informed student of history can easily read between the lines. In short, for the curious, I recommend this as the finest single volume on this topic, both for its informative content and its exciting, engaging writing style. I look forward to reading more of Morris' works.

Fascinating!

I gave this 6 CD set a 5 star rating for its easy-flowing, fact-packed and totally informative content. I was never bored for an instant, though I was disappointed that it ended when it did, before the end of the century, but I knew that this was one of a trilogy. The writer, and reader, brings to life the many colourful and quite incredible personalities that appeared to abound in those days. There was also no bias towards imperialism, and indeed, at times, clearly made the case against it, such as his portrayal of Gladstone and his opinion. A great work for anyone interested in history of this period.
