Diana Anderson-Tyler earned her degree in Radio-Television-Film from the University of Texas and her personal training certification from the Cooper Clinic in Dallas, Texas. She is also a Level 1 certified CrossFit coach. She’s the author of five faith and fitness books for women, including Fit for Faith: A Christian Woman’s Guide to Total Fitness and a memoir, Immeasurable: Diving into the Depths of God’s Love. She has been interviewed on The 700 Club, The Harvest Show, and has also been a guest on a number of radio broadcasts and podcasts. First Novel? Well done.

Diana Anderson-Tyler has woven together a tale rich with references to the Ancient Greek pantheon and the inner workings of ancient life. This has mythical creatures, mythical religions, and a not-so-friendly manifestation of Apollo. In a word, Anderson-Tyler knows her history and mythology. Her way of incorporating it into her story added depth and nuance to the book.

The story itself is about a young, bitter woman seeking revenge against her murderous master. However, her newly discovered power leads her on a circuitous journey that takes her further away from her master and achieving her desired goal. But this is a journey, and with any journey in a book or movie, the stated goal isn't usually the main goal. Thus, the novel is an adventure of physical and emotional endurance, of conflict and trial, and yes, of self-discovery.

I admit that from the beginning I didn't really like Iris that much as a character. Her vindictive spirit blind and limits her. However, this is likely Anderson-Tyler's aim, for Iris becomes more settled and whole as her journey continues. She is aided by some strong, yet misunderstood, characters (Tycho and a crusty, yet faithful, centaur) as well as misled by some slippery, misguided warriors. In learning who to trust, Iris learns about herself as well.

The story is told in a first person, present tense voice, similar to Katniss Everdean in The Hunger Games books. It's tricky to write in first person without sounding too clunky and stiff or artificial and contrived, but Anderson-Tyler pulls it off fairly well for the most part. In addition, there are several flashback scenes because so much of what drives Iris happened in the past. I found these scenes occassionally distracting, but they certainly give the reader an insight in what moves and motivates Iris.

Like the other reviewers, I too found myself reading on to "see what happens next." So even though I wasn't particularly fond of Iris, I did want to see how her story would end and how she would change. (I absolutely WANTED her to change! She needed to change to win a reader over.) Anderson-Tyler's handling of the end of Iris's journey delivers far and away more satisfaction than the slower middle portion of the book. Finishing the book--and Iris's journey--was worth the read.

Love this book! Can't say enough about it! Such an exciting adventure- I could not put it down! Incredibly well written and poetic. Talent and thought in every word to keep you wanting to read more. I really want and hope the adventure to continue!!! Great for the young adventure novel readers and adults alike. Considering how dominant the action film is in American popular culture, it's pretty astounding how little serious scholarship there's been about this important genre, outside of feminist rants (albeit justifiable), or overly intellectualized, post-modern deconstructions written by and for the miniscule audience of academics. ACTION SPEAKS LOUDER is the rare book which is written for the rest of us - for the educated, curious movie-goer who wants to think more seriously about movies we know and might even love.

While he's not above placing films in their historical context, or speculating about their larger meanings and their influences on society, author Lichtenfeld never loses sight of the fact that these movies are commercial enterprises - mass entertainments made within the confines of a commercial marketplace. He explores creative choices made by filmmakers and writers, and the book is peppered with interviews. Aware that form is content, Lichtenfeld delves into the stylistic features of the movies. He also explores how technological advances patently change the nature of these movies.

ACTION SPEAKS LOUDER combines the details fans love (think of a great DVD commentary) with serious scholarship. And best of all, it's highly readable (think extended New Yorker article) - not bogged down by the obfuscating, post-modern jargon that dominates academia. Highly recommended.

update of comprehensive, insightful, timely study of action films

Lichtenfeld has worked both in making films and as a film critic and commentator, including doing extra features for DVDs of several action films. He sees this popular film genre as "derived from the Western, film noir, and the police procedural (with special guest appearances made by the disaster film and others [with an evolution] quite analogous to the horror film." Though many films depict violence and mayhem, the action film is distinguished in that it ushered in a "new violence [which] would be deployed more to pleasure audiences than to jar them." This "new violence" came about from a shift in standards marking a "New Hollywood" and related changes in structures and pacing of films and cinematographic techniques such as lingering on the violence by slow-motion and close-ups. It is these and other elements, not merely the violence and plotting, which account for the new genre of the action film. The cluster of elements reflected changes in the culture's psychic relationship with violence and what it looked for in entertainment. Bonnie and Clyde is pointed to as a seminal action film, with the films Billy Jack, Shaft, and The French Connection closely related to it in paving the way for the action film by demonstrating its popularity and giving guidance for filmmakers. Advertising, publicity, and marketing of action films has as much a part in the author's multifaceted study of this major contemporary film genre as film history, film editing, and cinematography. References to numerous action films over the past couple of decades make for enjoyable as well as engaging and stimulating reading.

Since graduating in Textile and Surface Design, Kim Anderson has created an extensive portfolio of artwork for a variety of  greeting cards, gift wrap, cross-stitch kits and wall art in the U.K., Europe and the United States.

Kim gets inspiration from the colors and textures in everyday life. Her greeting card ranges have been in the prestigious finals of the Henries Awards, the highest accolade for design talent within the U.K. card industry. She is recognized for her use of paint, pen, ink and paper collage work, which have contributed to some beautiful ranges. Sometimes just taking a stroll around her colorful and cultural hometown can provide the spark that is enough to start the creative process.

Her commercial success has naturally followed her inspirational artwork and led to several collaborations with high-profile companies such as wall art for Oopsy Daisy and The Art Group, home decor with Jacqui Joseph Designs and top-selling cross-stitch kits from Bothy Threads.

Kim lives and works from her home in the U.K., in the creative city of Brighton with her son and their two cats.

Shocking. I hate that I know this goes on. I preferred not knowing, but the more folks who know, the better, if we want to stop such abuse against children.

This was an excellent read and I would recommend it to any one who may be faced with this type of abuse. There are so many children out there who go through this same type of thing and who honestly believe that this type of situation is alright when it is not. I truly believe this book could help change someone's life.
