Build a foundation in basic magic.

Picture Yourself As a Magician by Wayne N. Kawamoto (2008) is a beginner's book on magic.

Best Features: (1) This book is profusely illustrated with full color photos. (2) Contemporary props make new effects, such as iPod magic, possible for the first time. (3) The book itself is used as a prop for four of the effects: "The World's Best Card Trick," "Picture Yourself as a Magician - Revelation 2," "The Clock," and "The Mind Reader." (4) A DVD filled with demos and lessons is included inside the back cover of the book. The lessons include additional effects that are not taught in the book. One of the added effects is a cute sawing-a-woman-in-half trick that can be done close-up with homemade props.

I hope you like card tricks because six of the fourteen chapters in this book are devoted to card magic. In addition, several of the remaining chapters in the book include one or more card tricks in them. For example, the chapter on "Mind Reading and Future Predictions" includes an effect with a gimmicked deck of cards. The chapter on "Stand-Up and Stage Magic" includes a pick-a-card trick that uses a giant playing card as a prop. The chapter on "Magic for the Street" contains four card tricks: "The Mysterious Kiss," "Card to Wallet," "Card on Wall," and "Card Monte." The chapter on "Party Magic" includes two card tricks: "The Red Card" and "Touch a Card." The chapter on "Electronic Magic with iPods" incorporates two card tricks: "Card Detector" and "Card Transporter."

The amount of space given to card magic does not go to waste. The diligent disciple of card magic will learn basic card handling and sleight-of-hand with cards (use of a key card, false cut, card force, cross-cut force, false shuffle, Hindu Shuffle, double undercut) along with some great card tricks, such as, "The Rising Card," "Do As I Do," "Lost and Found," and the "Ten-Card Poker Deal." You will also learn how to use trick decks (Svengali Deck & Stripper Deck) in the correct manner.

My Favorite Chapter: I especially liked Chapter 12 on Levitation. Three different levitations are described ("The Balducci Levitation," "The Jacket Levitation," and "The Box Levitation"), all three of which are suitable for the street and can be done outdoors.

My Favorite Quote: "It's the experience that truly burnishes a routine."

My Only Gripe: The DVD was unexpectedly glued to the pocket that encased it. I had to find a solvent that would remove the sticky residue from the DVD's front, back, and edge. WD-40 to the rescue!

I personally have been an off and on gamer since I was five-years-old. I am now thirty-two-years-old and I have seen and played them all. Sometimes in healthy moderation and sometimes I find myself trapped in “chronoslip,” as Parkin describes it – the loss of time as one battles good, evil, or another person from the other side of the globe. My history mainly revolves around gaming consoles - from the Atari to what I currently own, the Xbox One. And on the PC I spent an unknown and presumably unhealthy amount of time in Starcaft and World of Warcraft. When I inadvertently or purposely decide to submerge myself into video games Simon Parkin’s “Death By Video Game,” truly captured why I had binged for hours, days, and even months at a time - escapism. The idea of escapism bleeds throughout the book along with the good, bad, and ugly of video gaming.

This is my first book I have read concerning the gaming culture, but more importantly its history and its merit to the developer and the gamer himself. The book focuses on an array of topics such as the massacre and bloodshed at Columbine and Sandy Hook as the murderers were gamers themselves. It explains why video games are a sort of different medium than television in correlation to freedom of speech. It becomes evident that video games may have limited freedom due to the fear of public backlash like a game where you assume the role of Lee Harvey Oswald and assassinate John F Kennedy again and again...

What I really liked about “Death by Video Game,” is that I could relate to his subjects who just wanted to flee from their own lives. As a former World of Warcraft player, I literally could not stop playing until I had realized I was not doing anything worthwhile in my life but searching for loot, the most powerful gear, and the rarest items. And for what - bragging rights and an eerie sense of accomplishment. In the end, no one but other hardcore gamers can relate and that is why this is a must read. Video games have and can ruin relationships and for those who don’t really understand the enthusiast who spends his day in front of the screen should read this. But as Parkin explains there is a certain thrill to it, like teaming with 24 other players online to down the last boss in a raid and reap the digital rewards. It is an experience, and to me it became a lifestyle to do the grind of leveling up, acquiring gold, and fulfilling requirements to proceed to the end game until the next expansion was released.

As an introduction Parkin goes to shed light on the deaths of Asian gamers who, well played in excess to their own demise. From there he shifts from political to the positive and negatives of gaming and its young history. It is a very satisfying read and for me, it led me to come to terms that gaming is essentially a killer of time. A genuine waste of time. But so is television and theater.

Wonderful book for independent filmmakers

I have been an independent producer/director for more than 35 years, and I learned something within the first few pages. This is a wonderful book for independent filmmakers and would-be independent filmmakers. It reflect the film business as it is in the real world. It is truly the "nuts and bolts" - told in a clear and interesting way. I immediately recommended it to a number of my friends who teach at the various film schools around New York City. It is one of the two best books I have ever read on the subject.

Great Book - Highly Detailed and Extremely Comprehensive

When you last got in your car and drove to the store - did you even think about all the things that are working in sync that help your car go? Gas, sparkplugs, catalytic converter, carburetor, computer systems, cooling systems, transmissions, gears, oil, etc. No. Most likely you don't think about that until the car stalls out in the middle of busy traffic and you suddenly have to search through the card catalogue of your mind thinking: "Okay, if the car spews black smoke and the engine won't turn over and the doo-hickey doesn't seem to be connected to the whatsis - then I have to..."

When you watch a film do you realize EVERYTHING that went into the process of making it? If you're like most people you define films by two things: Actor and Director. Maybe if you're a writer like me you add the screenwriter into the mix. But for most people it's: "Oh, that's that Meryl Streep movie!" or "I've heard it's one of Scorsese's best films." You certainly don't think: "Oh, wow, I think I'm going to go see that Jerry Bruckheimer production." We often don't think about everything that a producer does - but, more to the point: The producer does EVERYTHING.

In Maureen Ryan's book, she details EVERYTHING a Producer does from searching out the script, attaching the talent, massaging the budget, scheduling, setting up locations, calling in favors, assisting in shooting (possibly being an extra) to coordinating the post production and working through distribution. See? EVERYTHING.

The book is broken down into chronological chapters detailing the life of a film and she uses conversations with some producers to help make her points. She details every step of the process while also providing the reader with great examples of what, say, a budget should look like - or a contact list - or even a press kit. And you can find even more examples at her website.

"Producer to Producer" is fantastically detailed down to every minutia which is both its greatest strength and its strongest weakness. As I read through it I kept thinking to myself: "God, I've got to do a TON of stuff when I produce my next film (I've produced two micro-budget feature films)." But also thinking: "Thank God she goes into the details she goes into in this book because I hazard to guess that everything is in there." It's a bit of a double-edged sword.

As the book goes on through later chapters, she moves away from the conversations with other film-makers only to return later to that format. I would have liked her to have continued that through-out the book and then add more of what I would refer to as "war stories." If you're going to tell me I need to get the rights to a certain song - find a war story about a producer who didn't and how that ended up. I don't necessarily want to be "scared straight" in this process - but feel those stories would add weight to all the details that are being discussed.

For instance, here's a war story: Over a year ago a close friend of mine, a struggling writer, was ecstatic to see that her script was being made into a short. It was being shot in New York City with a decent sized cast and crew, the website posted behind-the-scenes photos and she loved knowing that within a few months there would be a short film with HER NAME ON IT!! Sadly, in post-production, the Editor wanted to get paid what was promised to him and since no pay was forthcoming, held the film hostage and refused to finish it. Where is the film now? Who knows.

How could the producer have foreseen this issue? How could this have been "nipped in the bud?" Where was the money going to come from to finish? How many people were now affected by this outcome? Could there have been an easier, more palatable solution?

Please, let me be very clear, this is an EXCELLENT book that gives you all the tools (and on-line resources) to get started in the land of producing - I would have just liked there to be a few more stories as to WHY it's important to get the rights to songs. WHY it's important to make sure the budget is in place before you start. WHY it's important to approach SAG (or not). Would some of these stories scare other producers away? Certainly...but they would also give weight to why a Producer has to do all that a Producer has to do. (Note: She includes a quick story about hiring a Production Assistant who had little/no experience who ended up damaging equipment that cost $2,500 to repair. Stories like that.)

All-in-all a great book. If you're thinking about ever producing a film - you can't go wrong having this book by your side.

Essential for Indie Producers

One of the "Indie World's" most highly respected producers, Maureen A. Ryan (Academy Award- winning Man on Wire) offers a tour de force guide to producing low-budget features. Ryan's agenda is comprehensive and unparalleled in a single 400-page book. She starts naturally in development and takes us through obtaining rights, log line, screenplay, proposal, pitch, financing and distribution. Chapters 2 & 3 address the breakdown and scheduling necessary for us to create a budget with many helpful hints to keep your project "lean and without pork". Chapters 4-10 deal with a potpourri of issues including presales, equity investors, casting and hiring the casting director, the production triangle(fast, good, cheap), locations, legal matters, and insurance. From Chapter 11-13, she discusses production and principal photography, the wrap and an amazing look at the technical issues a knowledgeable producer must know to make sense of the complex postproduction process. The remaining five chapters cover audio, music, archival issues, marketing/publicity, film festivals and the proverbial 800 lb gorilla: distribution and sales. There are helpful recap lists at the end of each chapter, wonderful checklists and interviews with experts. Having taught "producing" at the college level I can assure you that this single volume is a mini-course all to itself. If you are an "indie" contemplating a feature, this book is an essential read.

Easy To Read and Understand

Research, it is safe to say, is probably not the average person's favorite course to take in school. The subject itself, for most, is bland and boring and probably not very accessible from a learning standpoint.
Enter Leedy and Omrod. "Practical Research" is just an outstanding book to learn research from or to teach a research course with. First off, the book is small and it is written in simple language with "practical" examples. This makes the subject a lot more accessible to the average reader. Second, it contains lots of helpful hints and checklists to help make the learning process easier. The companion website for this book contains practice tests that the students can use to gauge their learning (as well as e-mail results to get feedback from the instructor).
Though the book is short, it is still very thorough and to the point. There is no tradeoff in quality of information for brevity which is a great point in favor of this book. Overall, this book is a superior learning tool because it communicates the research process very clearly. A student at any level, be it, middle school, secondary school, undergraduate or graduate, can easily learn the research process from this text.
We used this as one of the texts for a graduate level research methods course I took and it was a big hit with all enrolled in the class.

Poorly Updated

This is a required text for a class I am taking, but I have found it to be a poorly updated 9th Edition of a book. The first chapter gives such basic information about email, computers and the internet, that you would think the internet was just invented. Shame on the author and publishers for selling a book originally published in 1993 with very little work put in to making it relevant and current in its 9th Edition. For any aspiring or out of work authors, perhaps here is an opportunity to write your own book with a little more effort, which can be much more useful for today.

Beware - does not work!

This access card never worked and I had to return it for a refund. From working with both Amazon and the text's company, I was finally told that I should be wary of purchasing access cards from third-parties. Apparently the version this was is not an official publication from the publisher, so they could never get it to work. So - beware if you purchase this!

Leaves all other Macbeths in the dust

Both Patrick Stewart and Kate Fleetwood were outstanding. They put so much feeling into the words that one forgot they were using Shakespeare's prose. I have seen other productions with well known actors and this outshone them all.
The set and the witches were also terrifyingly good. I highly recommend this production.
