Hmmm...

This book fails to stand up to its title. I Think, Therefore I Am is constructed from very short, usually a 2-3 page overview of each of the world's most famous philosophers and their work. Obviously, from such superficial summaries you will not learn "all the philosophy you need to know".

Don't get me wrong, this book is well written, and at times even amusing; I'm just somewhat undecided as to what can be learned from it. Unfortunately, I can't recommend this book even to people who are interested in a short glimpse to the world of philosophy.

Brilliant
By still searching
....at what it does, which is not to provide an 'in-depth' overview of the development and main ideas of Western philosophy and neither anywhere, front or back, does it claim to do this! What it is is a kind of succinct 'bluffers guide' to philosophy so that, when encountered, in more serious tomes that do claim to acquaint the reader with more than a passing understanding view of the terrain they will have some familiarity.

It wets the appetite and definitely made this reader hungry for more!

Book Design Made Simple by Fiona Raven and Glenna Collett is an invaluable resource for would-be authors contemplating self-publishing. While it is true that anyone can self-publish a book, the reality is that there are many obstacles between the first words on the page and the first copy off the press. Book Design Made Simple is a logical, clearly-written guide to an efficient, organized self-publishing process. It contains practical technical information on how to use the industry-standard publishing platform InDesign to format and assemble a book, design advice to help the author create a polished, aesthetically-pleasing finished product, and a production blueprint to guide the author’s development efforts. I purchased a copy of Book Design Made Simple midway through my own self-publishing process and it has without a doubt helped me create a better-looking, more professional product.

This book will have you up and running in InDesign quickly and confidently

I was actually surprised how fantastic a resource (but now how beautifully designed) this book is. I had previously done my book design in Word and was tired of the hours I spent cursing up a blue streak to try to get that annoying son of a sea biscuit to behave. Never again.

This book had me up and running with a fully formatted fiction book in a few hours. Seriously, a few hours. AND, I have finally found the program that, with a little creative use of my new knowledge, let's me prepare a paperback and an ebook from the same file. No more exporting in html from Word and importing into Sigil. No more having to change two books if I have to make edits. Nice. I am now reformatting all of my books. If I wasn't also giving them a bit of a copyedit and converting the chapter titles to images, I'd have them formatted in an hour or two each. Since it's a series, I can just pull my styles in from the previous book, and I'm done!

Now, don't get the idea that InDesign will never do something untoward. You may have difficulties that the book doesn't immediately address. In that case, there's Google. Or just undo until the problem goes away. Then, go back to the section where you made the mistake and you can learn from your mistake where you varied from the instructions.

Great book for those just starting with InDesign. I had some hands-on help with InDesign and book design before I bought this book, and I found the material helped supplement and fill in the details and techniques I'd forgotten to write down, or that we didn't get to. I highly recommend this book for anyone getting into self-publishing. My first novella turned out fantastically!

Well-written, sizzling BDSM!

I absolutely loved this novella! I could easily identify with the main character, Lauren, in her ultimate quest to improve her sex life with her husband. In seeking out James, her new Dominant mentor, she relinquishes control of her sexuality and in return starts to learn what it will take to bring excitement back to her marriage. The mind control and descriptive erotica were so real I could picture myself actually involved in the scene. If you're looking for sizzling action and thought-provoking BDSM, this is the book for you. I can’t wait for this author’s next book! I highly recommend – well worth reading!

Absolutely great for the right readers

This is a hard book for me to review. I'm a guy reading books in a genre that is mostly aimed at women. Usually, that doesn't create a reading problem. Here it did. Bear with me. [To get to the basics: Taught is well written, well edited, and free of embarrassing typos.]

Taught concerns a woman so bored with her sexual life with her husband that she seeks out - pays for - fulfillment of her libido's needs in ways that - to me - are almost entirely humiliation. The book is well written, and the humiliation is excellent (in so far as I can judge). My problem is simply that the humiliation sought voluntarily by the heroine exceeds my capacity to accept as part of a fantasy, given the plot and the character of the two protagonists. I fully accept that humiliation has a central role in dark erotica and in books I've enjoyed. For example, in author Ashley Zacharias' book: A Lady Pays Her Penalties.

Plus, unfortunately for my being able to review the book, as a long time happily married guy, I'm not a huge fan of wives running down to the corner motel to seek solace in some other guy's control. Go figurel

So, if you enjoy the excitement of strong humiliation in your reading, I urge you to download the sample or just go ahead and buy the book.

I would like to learn more about geometry

Have you ever thought to yourself, "Gee, I would like to learn more about geometry," and picked up a copy of Heath's translation of Euclid, only to give up after repeatedly failing to follow the train of thought of the first 50 to 100 pages, feeling lost in a turbulent sea of details? Are you also a person that dislikes being treated like an idiot or a dummy? Then this book is for you. It presents the concepts of Euclidean geometry in clear, logical format that will be more understandable to a modern person, without dumbing down the subject at all. Also, the book connects the ideas of Euclid with other more modern approaches...which Heath's Euclid does also (to a certain degree). So I would highly recommend it to any reader pursuing a well-rounded understanding of mathematics.

Meserve is hooked to the analytical treatment of geometry, which in my opinion is the wrong way...

Forget about this confusion and adopt Coxeter's SUM : Introduction to Geometry, Projective Geometry, Geometry Revisited, The Real Projective Plane, Non-Euclidean Geometry

A must-have for any student or professional

The 6th edition of Fundamentals of Building Construction is the absolute best yet. This is a classic text for students and budding professionals, whether your specialty is interior design, construction or architecture. Though it is intended to be a classroom textbook, you can read it independently (and I recommend you do even if you don't have to read it for school).

The updated text includes new renderings and photographs, which is both useful and nice. It is also updated to include information about construction innovations, sustainable building, the latest building codes and technical notes. Included with each new book is the interactive resource center access code, which includes super handy resources and additional information.

The book itself is chopped into 24 manageable chapters which begin with the foundations of building and building foundations. It then moves through wood construction, masonry, steel concrete and into roofing, glass, cladding and finishes with interiors. Every now and then the text is sprinkled with "From Concept to Reality" sections which, as the name implies, show you a real example of the technique being studied. This is super for me, because I learn better when I can fit the information I am learning into a real world example. The book also has ample illustrations, renderings and pictures to help cement the information.

Written by experts and meticulously detailed, this is a must have in the library of any student or professional who wants a handy reference or to learn more about the world of construction.

Good book, but somewhat wandering

This book is intended as a technical aid, but while it points to construction types and what they are for, it does little to give actual data or pointers on how these types can be leveraged in design. Instead of clean line drawings, we have renderings and photos which, while descriptive in different ways, are not particularly helpful in figuring out how to draw these things.

Spells it ALL out

This book doesn't pull any punches, covering all aspects of construction, from building sites to foundations to wood types to fasteners to framing, siding, windows, doors, concrete, masonry, glass, glazing, roof types, roofing and on and on and on. The authors aren't just touching on these subjects, but delving deeply into each one. For example, with regard to roofing, they discuss roofing underlayment, eaves, rakes, roof drainage, overhangs, area dividers, low-slope roofs, steep roofs, cool roofs, roofing codes, etc. But they don't just talk, they provide detailed cutaway views with dimensions, descriptions of what everything shown is and what it does. If you're an architect, structural engineer, construction manager, builder or anyone technically curious enough to learn the details of construction materials and methods, then an investment in your own copy of this book would certainly be worthwhile.

The book, by the way, also comes with an access code to the John Wiley and Sons Interactive Resource Center, but it's only good for 540 days (after which, I believe, you would have to pay for continued access), it's for student rather than professional access (not sure of the distinction), and the tools don't really offer much that the book itself doesn't. The code gives you access to images, animations, flash cards, renderings, self-tests and a glossary. As I said, nothing special there. The book's all you really need for your money.
