Quite a bit missing from this Missing Manual

I thought there was quite a bit missing from this "Missing Manual" despite the fact that it's over 900 pages. Having said that, I should also make clear that I'm coming from a different place than most readers. I've built relational databases for over 30 years in environments other than FileMaker so I stumbled in some cases trying to unlearn things. In any case, there are a few things I'd like to point out which might help those using this book:

- The authors speak of using Entity Relationship Diagrams in Filemaker (although they do make reference in a note on page 200 that the diagram you'll be creating is, in the most technical sense, a real ER diagram). For those of us who have deep knowledge of ER diagrams please DO NOT pass over that distinction. If you think of the Relationship Graph in FileMaker as an ER diagram, it will cause you all sorts of problems. FileMaker's relationship graph is, from my perspective, a visual representation of data relationships but also interface design and process logic.

- If you want to get a better grasp of Relational Databases in FileMaker, I recommend Cris Ippolite's FileMaker tutorial series found at lynda.com. I also found that the book FileMaker Pro 10 by Ray Cologon (although 4 versions back) had a better discussion of the relationship graph.

- The Missing Manual book has a very light discussion of the Anchor Buoy approach on pages 619-620. Anchor Buoy is an approach specific to FileMaker that you won't find in any other database environment (that I know of) but it is an important one for FileMaker. The authors make a brief suggestion to search the Web for the terms anchor buoy, FileMaker data model, or FileMaker Relationships graph. Definitely DO THAT and, as the book suggests, join the FileMaker Community and look at the white papers there. Do NOT depend on this book for an understanding of Anchor Buoy.

- The FileMaker Community also has a video presentation posted from the last DevCon: Data Modeling Beyond Anchor Buoy - presented by Jason Young.. Highly recommend viewing that if you want to expand your knowledge in this area.

- The discussion of the Execute SQL script step on 535 is accurate as far as it goes but also incomplete. It gives the impression that the Execute SQL is only used with ODBC data sources but I've several highly experienced FileMaker developer friends who praise its use with native FileMaker tables as well. One of the advantages is that Execute SQL allows you to link data within FileMaker without having to create a FileMaker relationship to do so.

- I also didn't see any discussion of Virtual Lists. You can find discussion of FileMaker Virtual Lists at a number of places on the internet, but you could start here: http://mightydata.com/virtual-list-in-3-easy-steps/

- The book discusses FileMaker runtime solutions without making any note of FileMaker's plan to deprecate Runtime Solutions for future versions. Granted, the deprecation isn't absolutely certain (probably 95%+, though) so I can understand the book continuing to touch on runtime solutions. However, to not even mention FileMaker's intent to deprecate such solutions seems to be disingenuous at best.

I would have given this book 2 stars or less if I was just looking at the relational database aspects of it and the book's stance on FileMaker runtimes.

However, the book does have a lot of very useful guidance and I recognize my perspective is that of a deeply-experienced database developer (although still relatively new to FileMaker) looking at complex application development. For those who simply want to learn to use FileMaker and/or do fairly simple development, this book provides a good companion to the official FileMaker documentation and training.

These latter factors are the ones which have, in the end, persuaded me to give it a 3-star rating rather than a lower rating. Just be aware of some of the limitations listed above.

Useful, unless you don't make changes or add more functions to FileMaker Pro solutions

The FileMaker Pro 14 in the Oreilly The Missing Manual series is a huge book of 900+ pages. Due to the nature of the subject mattter (advanced but not enterprise level relational database management system), the book spends less than a quarter (about 200 pages) of its content on the basics that a casual user may want to know, and devotes the rest on topics that a developer would be interested to learn about. If you simply use a pre-written FileMaker Pro solution and do not make any modifications or add any functionality, there is no need to buy this book.

Depending on the scope and complexity of a project, a user may begin from scratch to construct a customized solution, or start with a solution provided by Apple or third parties and then add more functionality to the DBMS software. This book is useful for both kinds of users, as it covers the FileMaker Pro 14 in extreme detail the beginner to advanced user and developers. Chapters 1 through 5 are designed for the beginner, and I suggest the book to be read in successive numerical order for a general understanding of FileMaker Pro. Chapters 6 through 22 are more developer oriented, and you can select the chapters that are of interest to you.

Bridges the gap, but does not replace the FileMaker built-in Tutorials and documentation

Although touted as "the missing manual" series aka "the book that should have been in the box", I would not consider FileMaker Pro 14 The Missing Manual a replacement for the built-in Getting Started Tutorials or Reference documentation. Rather, it falls nicely in the middle, bridging the gap between the excellent and interactive but fairly basic Apple tutorials and the complete reference documentation. As such, this targets an intermediate (not beginner, not advanced) audience, even though there is a lot to learn even for seasoned long-time FileMaker developers like myself.

Two tips you won't regret:
1) Register your book at O'Reilly, and for $4.99 you can order the PDF / eBook version. This book is 946 pages so it's not easy to carry with you.
2) Make sure you download the "Missing CD" tutorial files to follow along with the chapters

Unlike Newton's mechanics, or Maxwell's electrodynamics, or Einstein's relativity, quantum theory was not created—or even definitively packaged—by one individual, and it retains to this day some of the scars of its exhilarating but traumatic youth. There is no general consensus as to what its fundamental principles are, how it should be taught, or what it really "means." Every competent physicist can "do" quantum mechanics, but the stories we tell ourselves about what we are doing are as various as the tales of Scheherazade, and almost as implausible. Niels Bohr said, "If you are not confused by quantum physics then you haven't really understood it"; Richard Feynman remarked, "I think I can safely say that nobody understands quantum mechanics."

The purpose of this book is to teach you how to do quantum mechanics. Apart from some essential background in Chapter 1, the deeper quasiphilosophical questions are saved for the end. I do not believe one can intelligently discuss what quantum mechanics means until one has a firm sense of what quantum mechanics does. But if you absolutely cannot wait, by all means read the Afterword immediately following Chapter 1.

Not only is quantum theory conceptually rich, it is also technically difficult, and exact solutions to all but the most artificial textbook examples are few and far between. It is therefore essential to develop special techniques for attacking more realistic problems. Accordingly, this book is divided into two parts; Part I covers the basic theory, and Part II assembles an arsenal of approximation schemes, with illustrative applications. Although it is important to keep the two parts logically separate, it is not necessary to study the material in the order presented here. Some instructors, for example, may wish to treat time-independent perturbation theory immediately after Chapter 2.

This book is intended for a one-semester or one-year course at the junior or senior level. A one-semester course will have to concentrate mainly on Part I; a full-year course should have room for supplementary material beyond Part II. The reader must be familiar with the rudiments of linear algebra (as summarized in the Appendix), complex numbers, and calculus up through partial derivatives; some acquaintance with Fourier analysis and the Dirac delta function would help. Elementary classical mechanics is essential, of course, and a little electrodynamics would be useful in places. As always, the more physics and math you know the easier it will be, and the more you will get out of your study. But I would like to emphasize that quantum mechanics is not, in my view, something that flows smoothly and naturally from earlier theories. On the contrary, it represents an abrupt and revolutionary departure from classical ideas, calling forth a wholly new and radically counterintuitive way of thinking about the world. That, indeed, is what makes it such a fascinating subject.

At first glance, this book may strike you as forbiddingly mathematical. We encounter Legendre, Hermite, and Laguerre polynomials, spherical harmonics, Bessel, Neumann, and Hankel functions, Airy functions, and even the Riemann zeta function—not to mention Fourier transforms, Hilbert spaces, hermitian operators, Clebsch-Gordan coefficients, and Lagrange multipliers. Is all this baggage really necessary? Perhaps not, but physics is like carpentry: Using the right tool makes the job easier, not more difficult, and teaching quantum mechanics without the appropriate mathematical equipment is like asking the student to dig a foundation with a screwdriver. (On the other hand, it can be tedious and diverting if the instructor feels obliged to give elaborate lessons on the proper use of each tool. My own instinct is to hand the students shovels and tell them to start digging. They may develop blisters at first, but I still think this is the most efficient and exciting way to learn.) At any rate, I can assure you that there is no deep mathematics in this book, and if you run into something unfamiliar, and you don't find my explanation adequate, by all means ask someone about it, or look it up. There are many good books on mathematical methods—I particularly recommend Mary Boas, Mathematical Methods in the Physical Sciences, 2nd ed., Wiley, New York (1983), or George Arfken and Hans-Jurgen Weber, Mathematical Methods for Physicists, 5th ed., Academic Press, Orlando (2000). But whatever you do, don't let the mathematics—which, for us, is only a tool—interfere with the physics.

Several readers have noted that there are fewer worked examples in this book than is customary, and that some important material is relegated to the problems. This is no accident. I don't believe you can learn quantum mechanics without doing many exercises for yourself. Instructors should of course go over as many problems in class as time allows, but students should be warned that this is not a subject about which anyone has natural intuitions—you're developing a whole new set of muscles here, and there is simply no substitute for calisthenics. Mark Semon suggested that I offer a "Michelin Guide" to the problems, with varying numbers of stars to indicate the level of difficulty and importance. This seemed like a good idea (though, like the quality of a restaurant, the significance of a problem is partly a matter of taste); I have adopted the following rating scheme:

* an essential problem that every reader should study;
** a somewhat more difficult or more peripheral problem;
*** an unusually challenging problem, that may take over an hour.

(No stars at all means fast food: OK if you're hungry, but not very nourishing.) Most of the one-star problems appear at the end of the relevant section; most of the three-star problems are at the end of the chapter. A solution manual is available (to instructors only) from the publisher.

In preparing the second edition I have tried to retain as much as possible the spirit of the first. The only wholesale change is Chapter 3, which was much too long and diverting; it has been completely rewritten, with the background material on finite-dimensional vector spaces (a subject with which most students at this level are already comfortable) relegated to the Appendix. I have added some examples in Chapter 2 (and fixed the awkward definition of raising and lowering operators for the harmonic oscillator). In later chapters I have made as few changes as I could, even preserving the numbering of problems and equations, where possible. The treatment is streamlined in places (a better introduction to angular momentum it! Chapter 4, for instance, a simpler proof of the adiabatic theorem in Chapter 10, and a new section on partial wave phase shifts in Chapter 11). Inevitably, the second edition is a bit longer than the first, which I regret, but I hope it is cleaner and more accessible.

Great textbook, worth it to buy the original

This is an *amazing* book. Unfortunately, the international edition I got had an error where all the important symbols and glyphs were misprinted (e.g. < Ψ* | iħd/dx | Ψ > becomes < Ψ* ihd/dx Ψ >).
This is a huge problem, and these misprints caused me to waste hours of my time solving problems that didn't actually make any sense because some of the symbols were altered.

If you have any commitment to quantum physics beyond a passing interest, you're really gonna want the more expensive hardcover edition of the book, which is what I bought after a month of frustration with this version.

Don't buy this paperback version

It's a great book, but don't order the paperback version. It has different problems sets (example: problem 3.11 in the actual book is problem 3.16 in the paperback). I don't even think it's the international version, because even that still has the right hw problems. Unless you have Chegg or some other way to get the correct problems for homework, just pay the extra for the hardcover. Otherwise, it's a pretty good book for Quantum Mechanics.

Great, Easy to follow

Used this textbook for a 2 course series at my university and loved it. This is one of the better textbooks I used in my time as a physics undergrad. I found it easy to follow and not super dry to read. The quality of the book itself is great and has held up all year just fine.

Compiled and Edited by David Allen. Well this David Allen has done it again,great job. Wish he would allow us to look inside all of his books on Neville Goddard. I am still reading this book,but anything by Neville is amazing. This is a collection of 16 lectures from various years and the 1948 lessons which consist of 5 lessons and 3 chapters from 3 of his books,"The Coin of Heaven, To Him Who Hath, and Consciousness."
To have this compiled like is what I have been hovering around in my own mind and thinking and now here it is in a nutshell.
Very easy to read,which some of Neville's works can be intense to grasp or if your lucky to get it very easily.

A Flawless Biography of a Unique American

What can you say about a shy, slender, half-blind woman, about five feet in height, who slept on the open prairie, lived with Indians on South Dakota's Pine Ridge Reservation, interviewed the likes of Black Elk, He Dog, Short Bull, Red Feather and others who personally knew Crazy Horse, who had already struggled for years as a writer before penning the ultimate biography of America's first authentic hero? From page one of "Crazy Horse: The Strange Man of the Oglalas" there is a sense that something spectacular is being recorded for posterity, never again to be witnessed by a living being. We are fortunate that Mari Sandoz lived during a time when the legend of Crazy Horse was still able to be told by those who knew and lived with him, but even more fortunate is that this amazing biography was written by an artist of the highest order. The story of the great Lakota warrior who refused to let his heritage be destroyed by the white man, will make you weep and wish you could have ridden with him on that open prairie.

Crazy Horse: The Strange Man of the Oglalas

In his foreword to the 50th anniversary edition, Stephen Oates, himself an historian and biographer of note, describes how Sandoz came to write the life of Crazy Horse and states,"Mari Sandoz and Crazy Horse may be the most potent pairing of author and subject in the history of modern biography." He praises Sandoz for writing "with a creative and lyrical brilliance that makes Crazy Horse a tour de force of language and style" and calls the book "...an almost perfect work of biographical art." I could not agree more with Oates. I have read the entire book two times and portions of it many more times.
Readers are often faced with the dilemma of deciding to read further after the first few chapters of a book in the hope they'll "get into it" or to close it and turn it into a dust-catcher. Not so with Sandoz's Crazy Horse. The reader is immediately drawn into it. I was hooked by the lyricism of the first few words of the book which told me that this was going to be no ordinary biography. They read as follows: "The drowsy heat of middle August lay heavy as a furred robe on the upper country of the Shell River, the North Platte of the white man. Almost every noon the thunders built themselves a dark cloud to ride the far crown of Laramie Peak. But down along the river no rain came to lay the dust of the emigrant road, and no cloud shaded the gleaming 'dobe walls and bastions of Fort Laramie, the soldier town that was only a little island of whites in a great sea of Indian country two thousand miles wide."
This story is told, not in the voice of a distant historian, but in the voice of an eyewitness. The vividness of her narrative would convince you, if you did not know otherwise, that Sandoz walked with Crazy Horse and his people. But even though she did not walk with them, she knew them well.
This is an extraordinary work of creative nonfiction that makes you love being a reader.

A Novel or Biography?

The strange man of the Lakotas made very little contact with the "white man" and remains a mysterious character of native American culture. Not much is known about him, his birth, his death, his burial.

Sandoz attempts to document as much history is known about this man, and she puts it in the form of a novel. It is easy to read and entertaining. Yet it includes historical facts, events and characters. While it is difficult to pen a biography about someone who so little is known about, Sandoz documents all that is known about him in this book. Many of the facts were taken from interviews with people who knew him and lived with him. Those people are all long gone. The only comprehensive memory of Crazy Horse is this book.

About the Author
Lynda Zussman, teacher, educator and writer, wrote two screenplays in the 90's, "Panic" and "Papa Rose." As a Special Education educator to children and young adults, she guided others by studying and developing her own spirituality. A must-read for anyone who embraces the human spirit

Lauren Zussman was a stunningly beautiful young woman, a Ford model in Manhattan, and eight years sober when she suddenly collapsed and died while running in Central Park on Memorial Day, 2008.
I met her mother, Lynda Zussman, at an event where I spoke about the power of independent publishing and the focus of New York publishers on a book's marketing plan, not its contents.
Lynda had written a manuscript about Lauren's life and shocking passing, which I read and found incredibly powerful, upsetting, and ultimately uplifting.
I urged Lynda to ignore the foolhardiness of the New York publishers and bring the book out herself.

LAUREN'S TRANSFORMATION AND SPIRIT SHINES THROUGH AND PAINTS A REAL PICTURE ABOUT RECOVERY, HOPE, COURAGE, AND HEALING.

A must have for all security professionals

I recently purchased four incident handling books and one of them was the Blue Team Handbook. The other three books were much larger in volume but this handbook provided so much applicable content in such a condensed fashion that I'm not sure I needed to purchase the other three. This book would be great for both beginners or seasoned professionals.

At this point I've bought a copy of the Blue Team Handbook for every security team member at my organization. Thank you Don Murdoch for putting this handbook together. I highly encourage all security professionals whether red team or blue team to purchase this book.

A steal at $15 - Must Have for Incidents, Admins, InfoSec
This is a detailed review of the Blue Team Handbook Incident Response Edition. The book is organized in 35 major topics, each one very focused on a particular topic relating to the cyber security incident response process. For example, the “Using Snort” section has a discussion, practical examples, and real world command line usage of the tool. Sections have varying degree of detail – but they all include advice from a clear expert who has done the job. Two things that are nice. First, the book is well edited, has very good sentences, and no glaring spelling mistakes you would expect from a first edition self-published title. Second, at the end of nearly each section, there’s a tag line which advises how the topic is used for incident response.
From beginning to end:
The book starts with some ideas borrowed from the military – fog of war, etc. Good advice. Next there is an in depth, and practical, treatment of the incident response process, with illustrations. After that, the author provides insightful guidance on reporting through two different templates – one which follows the IR process previously described, and one from the commercial sector. These section both give spot on advice. There is a pretty clear outline of the attack process. This section doesn’t have a lot of depth; it does have a good overview to help an IR person understand how they will be assaulted, in keeping with the IR focus (not pen test focus). There is advice on using GPG, which would likely work well in the academic space. The netcat and crypt cat discussions tell you how to use these tools nicely – and there are some funny pictures for humor.
The automated tools info doesn’t have a lot of “follow up usage” depth – but it does have solid advice, and does tell you how to preserve data for later analysis. Also in keeping with “incident response”. The volatile data collection sections (Windows, Linux) have lots of examples organized along the volatility order. One thing missing is making a disk image of RAID or server type systems.
The “network device”, “network analysis”, and “suspicious traffic patterns” sections are great. This is where the book really shines. You can tell this author has “been there, done that” and preserved lots of useful information for the reader.

Great book

Nice companion to the RTFM. I have been in INFOSEC for a while and I found most of the book to be somewhat generic. My feelings may not apply to everyone else though. There seems to be an idea out there that everyone in INFOSEC sits around grepping Snort logs and/or TCP dumps; this simply is not the case. As an incident first responder the job is fairly straight forward: isolate and collect the logs. Everyone has their own methods I guess. Some OS'es require you leave the system connected before collecting logs this book does not cover that aspect. Not everyone can afford a SANS course so in that respect this condensed field guide is a plus+. Simply put; you cannot afford to not have this book. A must buy.

A great book!

If you're looking for a book that teaches the concepts of drug math in a no nonsense way, then buy this book! It's got lots of great information, tons of practice problems and some helpful hints for remembering conversion factors. I purchased two other books before getting this one and this was the book that really helped me.

Before this book I failed math exams at least once sometimes twice before passing. Since this book I have passed first time every time. This book is a life saver & what is really wonderful is that the information sticks. This book breaks it down very simply & has lots of practice problems, with lots of hints. I can't say enough about this book except BUY IT RIGHT NOW especially if you are struggling in math or if like me you get physically ill at the thought of math!

Not so good

I wasn't thrilled over this book! sorry... I felt it was the LONG way of doing the math when there are shorter ways to get the same answer! Also-I felt for the money the book wasn't chock full of the IV med math info. I needed. It was missing a How To do IV math concerning when there is a time change to the infusion, which should have been included.

Not happy

There were over 100 pages missing from book. There is an answer section to the book which would have been very helpful. I just had my first radiology exam in dental school and when I found the pages missing I was very upset!!

A must book for library

The book covers majority of the topics using different type of questions, picture quiz etc. A student can learn a lot using this book. Authors can come out with interactive CDs which can make it more interesting.
