Beyond Strategy: The Leader's Role in Successful Implementation, by Robin Speculand

Due to the staggering failure of leaders to deliver on the strategy promises, implementation has become an integral part of strategy discussions, in the last few years. In Beyond Strategy, Robin shifts his focus from why strategy implementation is important, which was the focus of his last international best seller Bricks to Bridges, to what leaders must now do differently. Something needs to change and it starts with the leaders.

Implementation of strategy can't simply be delegated. In the book he provides the model, structure, and specific actions leaders must take to go beyond strategy and deliver on their promises. The book is based on the latest thinking and divided into the areas of the Implementation Compass™, a tool for implementing strategy that identifies the eight global best practices of implementation. Each chapter ends with the actions leaders must take. It is succinct, action orientated, and packed with useful tips and case studies.

The book is a breakthrough in understanding leader's responsibilities in strategy implementation.

From the Author
Beyond Strategy is the second book I have written on strategy implementation.

The book was inspired by our clients. After we published our first book on strategy implementation, Bricks to Bridges, our clients told us that they understood how the organization had to change but bot the leaders role in strategy implementation. This was our inspiration. Beyond Strategy is written for leaders to understand that they don't implement the strategy; they oversee it and if they take their attention off the implementation so will their people.

Implementation fails more often than it succeeds and leaders must be role model, coach, inspiration and guide through the implementation.

From the Inside Flap

Leaders appreciate and understand that it is just as tough (if not tougher) to implement a great strategy as it is to craft it. Strategy implementation has become a discussion topic in board rooms and among leaders around the world, due to its staggering high failure rate. The field is evolving and in Beyond  Strategy, I move from building leaders  awareness  of the strategy  implementation  challenge--which was the focus of my last book Bricks to Bridges: Make Your Strategy Come Alive, published  in 2004, to addressing  specifically the leader's role in successful implementation. At the core of this role is the need for leaders to recognize that current attitudes, approaches, and actions are a major factor behind these dismal results. To improve the chances of success, leaders must change what they are doing today.

The oft-quoted observation in the  1999 Fortune  magazine  cover story, "Why  CEOs  Fail," explained,  "Organizations fail to success- fully implement  strategy  not because  of bad  strategy but  because  of bad execution." This was one of the first times the field of implementation  (the terms execution and implementation are interchangeable) received major  exposure. In 2002,  Ram Charan followed  up the article by teaming  up with Larry Bossidy to write Execution: The Discipline of Getting  Things  Done, the book  that  made "execution" a common  word in mainstream business.2  Since its publication, leaders have begun  to focus on the topic,  and  a growing number  of books and articles have followed.  Two years after Execution was released I published Bricks to Bridges, which is a handbook for leaders in implementing strategy,  and has become an international best seller and a university supplementary textbook. There still, however, exists among leaders a vast gap of knowledge, techniques, and tools in the field.

From the Back Cover
Robin Speculand's Beyond Strategy deserves a place in the toolbox of every CEO with a great vision that they want to see become a reality. His years of research and insight into successful strategic implementation reinforce the fact that a solid strategy, in itself, is not enough to succeed. His advice is relevant, concise and right on target. I urge any leader interested in lasting and continual success to put into practice without delay the implementation guidelines contained in this book.

CEO, CNBC Arabiya

People are constantly talking about big ideas or the big think for organizations. But that is the easier part. We can all dream. As Robin knows, it’s the implementation that’s the tough part. When you’re ready to execute, use this book to drive your implementation success.

Deriving and agreeing on a strategy is usually easier than the actual execution. Many leaders, aside from formulating the strategy, are also responsible to manage the execution of the strategy. Robin Speculand’s new book provides excellent insights and lessons that makes the execution challenge easier. Easy to read with excellent takeaways.

I am delighted that Robin Speculand took the step of going beyond "Bricks to Bridges" to have this heart-to-heart talk with leaders in Beyond Strategy. The book is timely as we are living in a totally different world after the credit crisis and we need leaders to "wake up," internalize their strategy and "walk the talk." I am glad that Robin is taking this ownership right at the top, at the board level and yet not forgetting that it's people who makes strategy come alive and leaders have to know how to motivate, influence and steer the pathway for the right strategy to work. It's timely that leaders take charge and the book serves to help them deliver. I look forward to seeing many leaders come on board and take their companies beyond strategy.

Thorough and Succinct
By J.Ilog
The previous reviewers with their 5 star evaluations are all correct. Robin does an excellent job of laying out the significance of implementing a new strategy, emphasizing the importance that an implementation needs to be reviewed every 2 weeks in small components and in aggregate once every 3 months.

I had written down numerous pages that I would deem worthy to quote.

Here are a few ideas from the author.

"...implementing strategy is at least twice as hard as crafting strategy. The fact that 9 out of 10 implementations fail supports this statement...no leadership team intentionally adopts a bad strategy. It is only in the course of execution that leaders realize that the strategy is not performing. By being good at implementation, organizations will be able to read the signs and make the necessary changes. It is the implementation of a strategy that delivers revenue, not the crafting...Leaders must realize that strategy can't be implemented if it can't be understood, and it can't be understood if it can't be broken down into action steps. While strategy is designed at the top of the organization chart, it gets implemented from the bottom up. Effective communication fills the gap and brings the two together."

He also provides a guideline on how to keep the momentum building after a new strategy is announced.
"Structured communication should be conducted targeting different groups with selected messages designed to accomplish the following objectives:

1. Regularly update staff members on the progress of the implementation.
2. Share success stories and lessons learned from failures.
3. Provide updates of upcoming activities, change, and developments.
4. Share news of the strategy's impact on the business, customer, and operations.
5. Ensure staff members remain engaged in the implementation and take the right actions."

This is just the tip of the iceberg, as the strategist would be well served to read this book.

Developing the Action Plan for Success
By Larry Underwood
Many organizations fail when they become bogged down with bureaucracy, red tape and hubris; they rely on past performance, thinking that the strategies that brought success a few years ago will be applicable to today's competitive marketplace. They discover, often too late, that everything changes; the inability to keep pace with these changes is a long-term plan for failure.

In the shaky landscape of corporate America, this is an all too recurring theme; without a clear cut plan for implementing the strategies necessary to keep the organization moving forward, the results are usually unfavorable. That sound of spinning wheels is the sound of an organization going nowhere; and it's the CEOs who are responsible for this failure to make things happen; the buck stops there, as we all know.

Robin Speculand understands the importance of the leader's role in getting things done for the organization to thrive; without the proper leadership at the helm of any organization, all the planning, all the strategies, all the meetings are useless. This may appear to be quite obvious for the casual observer, but the fact of the matter is, successful implementation of stategies is only happening about 10% of the time; if that's not corporate America's wake-up call, I don't know what is.

For any leader willing to change that disastrous scenario, this book is a critical resource; but you'd better hurry. Big business isn't very forgiving for those who don't understand the basic survival skills.

A must read for all of those that want to succeed!
By Gudrun Ragnarsdottir
Beyond Strategy sums up all you need to know to successfully implement your strategy. The book is basically a manual to "how to implement strategy". Research shows that 90% of companies fail when implementing their strategy. The Implementation Compass that Robin Speculand presents in this book is exactly what you need as your roadmap to excellence. I have used the Implemenation Compass framework for almost 2 years as an consultant and it really works! The tools that Robin presents in the book are also very helpful in ensuring the sucess of the implemention plan. The concepts and ideas that Robin has developed through the years deserve to be noticed and applied. In todays business world we cannot afford failure again and again. I know for a fact that they increase the success rate of any strategy implementation.
