The Perfumer's Bible

This book is what is called the Perfumer's Bible.
The first edition was from 1923, a time when synthetics were limited in number. It is a wonderful read for an interested amateur as myself. I learned almost everything that I know about perfume making from him. W.A.Poucher was chief perfumist with Yardley for over 30 years.
But be aware that this 9th editon is the original writing by W.A. Poucher. The 10th edition is not written by him. His title and name is used to make an up-to-date edition with no comparison to the original.

A bit overpriced for what you get. There are plenty of formulas that are somewhat dated. I doesn't include most of the modern aroma chemicals. But it does give some valuable formulae for synthetic rose otto and some others. Not worth the cost in my opinion...

This book takes a smarter approach at beating addiction. Elisabeth Davies identifies addiction as a compulsive and unwanted habit. The book empowers people to manage these behaviors. If the reader can control the behavior, they can then choose to continue or not. Quitting anything is so abrupt, its like ripping the security blanket from a child; it creates insecurities and anxiety. Teaching new ways to cope with desires and compulsive thoughts is something that takes time. The reader can work at their own pace with no outside pressure. The behavior needing change was built a over time; so it may take some time to change. This book gives the reader the time and the results they need in the privacy they may be looking for. Great book, Great approach!.

As a former Addiction Counselor, I would welcome a workbook that is very personal, and informative as well as very client oriented. The exercises are client friendly, and produce self thought in all areas of the recovery process. When a client has something such as this workbook to refer to during their recovery, it makes an already tough process a little easier and with greater chance of success.
I would recommend anyone in this field to get this book and share it with their clients.

I've completed this book 3 times now and it is amazing. I've done extensive counseling with the author, Elisabeth Davies, and I cannot describe in words what Elisabeth does. She is very knowledgeable and has dedicated her life's work to helping others. This book is cognitive behavioral based and spiritual based to help people recover step by step from their addictions or struggles (as it did me). Elisabeth does hold a Masters in Psychology and has done her research and first hand experience so this book is factual. I recommend this book for anyone who is looking to better their life. Also, I recommend getting in touch with the author as she is one of the nicest and most helpful people on the face of earth.

Grade 7 Up—Sophomore Lucius Wolfe lost both hands in an explosion of his own making, and now he is left to pick up the pieces—with steel hooks. The story is told in alternating chapters by Lucius (Crazy) and Aurora (Beautiful). Baratz-Logsted does a deft job of weaving the perspectives together to show events from both points of view. Lucius chooses a bus seat so as to be left alone and is immediately called "crip"; Aurora gets on the same bus, smiles at people, and hears a voice call "New girl! Come sit back here with us." It doesn't help that Lucius has an air of arrogance about him and has changed schools to find a new start. The author spends equal time on several plotlines: Lucius, the brilliant loner destructo-kid, his amusing sister and his dysfunctional family; Aurora and her newly widowed saintly father; Nick, the good-guy security guard with dreams of the NFL; a school play; a false accusation; and Cecelia and Jessup, the scheming spurned lovers. Resolving everything makes the final chapters feel rushed and too perfect. However, the pacing is energetic and the topics current. Did I read the same book as the other reviewers?

For me, a romance needs to work--and be realistic--when the two main characters INTERACT with each other. Lucius and Aurora hardly interact at all. She feels sorry for him; he idolizes her. They have dinner together once and it seems Aurora and her father do all the talking. And the whole Gallowglass thing had me rolling my eyes so vigorously, I thought I'd sprain them.

Aurora's character is very simplistic. She's sweet to everyone whether they are sweet back or not because her mother told her to be. Lucius is just plain confusing. Why (SPOILER!!!!) would he want to do harm? Because his dad never played football with him? Please give me a break.

This book is inoffensive, for the most part, but really lacking in any character development or realistic dialogue, scenes, plot development--you name it. The characters are only 15, yet (Lucius, in particular) they speak so very formally. I realize this is supposed to be a retelling of Beauty and the Beast, but if you retell a story in a modern setting, I think the characters should reflect that setting. The ending is incredibly abrupt and the whole story is less than 200 pages long. Many books I've read have hardly even gotten into the heart of the story by the 200th page.

If you still have to read this, check it out from your local library. Really the only thing I found mildly interesting was the book's cover under the dust jacket--a violent pink that was far more vibrant than anything within the pages. For a MUCH better retelling of the Beauty and the Beast story, pick up Alex Flinn's "Beastly". Now THAT is an awesome book.

Fantastic modern retelling of Beauty & the Beast

In Crazy Beautiful, Lauren Baratz-Logsted revisits Beauty and the Beast, adapting this tale of love and transformation to a present-day setting. First meet the Beast, Lucius, who lost his hands in an explosion of his own doing. As an act of self-punishment and to keep others at a distance, Lucius chooses to live with hooks rather than prosthetic hands. Now meet Aurora, absolutely radiant, not to mention talented, but unhappy after losing her mother. Both new kids at school, they go in different directions: Lucius becomes a brooding loner while Aurora's beauty and clothing instantly attract the popular crowd. Nevertheless, small waves and smiles exchanged between the two quickly add up as Lucius realizes that not even his hooks will scare Aurora away. Together, they learn how to forgive, accept, and love.

To start, the cover of Crazy Beautiful is to die for. The stark contrast of the black and white, the unique font, and the smoke give the cover an edgy look that will instantly attract young adults. This fairy tale retelling is fast-paced, with short, to-the-point chapters. Unlike the original tale, the weight of the story is told from Lucius's point of view. Still, the chapters alternate perspectives, providing the reader with insight from both sides of various situations. Crazy Beautiful is full of raw emotion, as both narrators reveal their fears and insecurities, just like those any teenager tries to hide. Lauren Baratz-Logsted adds a nice touch by complicating the story with the high school's production Grease and Jessup's role as a parallel to Gaston. Though I couldn't pull myself away from this book, I found that the climax resolved itself too quickly. As a result, the end conflict was rather anticlimactic and difficult to believe. Overall, Crazy Beautiful is a well-done modern retelling of Beauty and the Beast that will captivate its readers. 8 of 10.

Weak Story

Finally getting around to writing this post. Book has been done for weeks. Been meaning to write this review, but now after these past three weeks I still don't like the book. Sure Crazy Beautiful by Lauren Baratz-Logsted had a great concept that hasn't been written about. No, one ever has had a character like Lucius, who blew off his arm in an experiment. What was the experiment? Don't know wasn't told. It was just explosive and a part of him wanted it to be worse than it was. Why did he want that? Don't know. What was this great beauty that was so crazy? Apparently it was just Aurora and how she liked him. Sure that could be really sweet. To me though I feel like since this had to do with something so tragic such has having a guy blow up his arms, I feel like it should be more powerful. I don't want to give anything away, but I feel like the book in general and the ending could have been more powerful. I want author to go back and rewrite it and make it longer. Go into more about the characters relationships with their family members. What made them do what they did. You see a glimpse of this, but I believe not enough.

The ending sure it was cute, I'll give her that, but it was very weak. Not going to say what it was, I will say though it was about 3o words or less. Not really sure. It was short, to short. It rushed through the climax, I was hoping then at least the ending would give you more closer. It just went, yea it over! Pretty lame in my opinion. But, it was good enough for me to finish, so at least it had the cuteness factor.

LOVED this book, was super excited to read Risten's story because I luv his character & I was not disappointed, we have learned that through Syn & Ryder's books that Risten is way deeper than the public face most people see & this book showed SOO many sides to him & gave us a detailed account of his past & childhood & struggles that have made him the man he is today, it also had some of our favs from syn & Ryder's books & I am super excited to read stories for the rest of the Elite Guard

I loved this book. Even though in the other books Ryder was the anti hero, I always had a soft spot for Ristan. Olivia the bane of Ristan's existent was delightful. She combined meek librarian with sex kitten to make a sweet sexy heroine. The plot while starting slow builds to a spectacular finale.

Easy read, wonderful information

This book is proof that financial education does not have to be boring nor confusing.

Pros: Very good overview of how to budget for any level of finance knowledge. You will not have an excuse to not do a budget anymore.
Discussed topics that I didn't think about (e.g., disability insurance).
Includes tear out segments in the back of the book so that you can create a sample budget. Basically flashcards of highlights in the book.
Font is a comfortable reading size and there is a good balance in color.

Cons: I wish that the publication went into more details about Roth IRA's. However, the author did an excellent job with informing his audience of various retirement options.

Overall: Simple read that encourages me to make a change in my finances. The author makes me believe that change is possible!

Good book if you are not new to Cocoa/Cocoa Touch

This book are for those already familiar with Cocoa/Cocoa Touch.
It does not use Objective-C, but it implies you are in a transition from Objective-C to Swift. When I say that it implies it's because from the beginning it assumes that you are already accustomed to the name of the classes and how to write an app.
I have some basic experience on Cocoa Touch and Objective-C so I could go on reading. This book covers lots of advanced topics from the first chapters, for example: on chapter 4 it starts covering some basic about views and UI, but it barely start talking about that one of the first examples of the chapter is how to add animation like gravity, snapping and a little bit of Core Animation. In my humble opinion that's for later, much later. I think you should build a basis on app development and then you go to advanced topics.

Anyway, if you are new to Cocoa/Cocoa Touch there are books easier to follow and grasp the basic concepts (even using Objetive-C), like 24h iOS Development by John Ray. It assumes that you don't know neither Objective-C or CocoaTouch and start working on examples to show you .

However if you already know the basics of CocoaTouch/Cocoa, and have written some apps, you will find lots of good information and code examples to improve your apps, and better understand some underlying concepts in Cocoa

Great primer for existing programmers

Excellent introduction for me.

I'm a C++ programmer and I wanted to learn Apple's new programming language. I picked this book up based on my enjoyment of past O'Reilly books and I have not been disappointed. The book covers a large variety of useful topics and mostly explains everything as it goes.

I particularly enjoy the chapters:
"Programming in Swift"

"SpriteKit"

"SceneKit"

"Working with the Real World"

"Working with Text"

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is already programming but wants to learn Swift. It is very concisely written and covers a lot of ground rapidly, but it doesn't ramp up too fast and knows its target audience well. The topics covered are varied and all are useful and relevant. My only possible complaint is that it mixes iOS and Macintosh development together, but this does not bother me as I want to learn both platforms. Fantastic book.

Indispensable Swift book

I was given the paper edition of this book as a late Christmas present and really enjoyed it but had to leave it at my familys house as my young newphew demanded to learn iPhone progrmming. I've since purchased my own electronic copy so I can read it at work. I found this book an excellent combination of Mac and iPhone programming and it introduces Swift in a good way. I am happy with the examples and found the code on Github very useful.

My only complaints are that it tries to cover Mac and iPhone fairly equally and often doesn't need to. The exaples are all excellent and the pretty is cleary and (extremely) concise.

Simply the Most Profound and Helpful Metaphysical Book Ever!

Let me preface this with the fact that I have been studying metaphysics and actively applying the principles for more than 20 years. I find this book to be more clear in thought than most of the Unity, Christian Science and other spiritual/new age books I have read and enjoyed. (countless books....100's literally). Mr. Goldsmith is a Master and Master teacher. If you are mature enough to encounter him, you are ready for the biggest and most positive transformation of your life. I read pgs. 1-83 of this book and my income doubled practically overnight. There is a quote on pg. 83 that I have distributed to clients all over the country. "Are we that which receives, or are we that center from which the infinity of God flows out? Are we the multitudes who sat at the feet of the Master waiting to be fed, or are we the Christ feeding the unillumined? In the answer to that lies our degree of spiritual fulfillment." I might add that someone gave me a Goldsmith book about 7 years ago, and I couldn't get into it at all. After spiritually maturing, I find him refreshing, illuminating and a true God-send! I am to the point where if I had to eliminate all authors but one from my bookshelves, I'd keep Goldsmith. I am currently reading about three of his books simultaneously. They are deep and rich. They take time, but they give so very very much! I would welcome comments from anyone who is touched by Goldsmith. Linda Schiller-Hanna

Mysticism in Practice

I have been reading about mysticism and the experience of God for the past couple years. Goldsmith does an excellent job of presenting the reality of God within--that he is not a distant being, but one as close as our breath. His writing is fresh and filled with supporting Biblical references. In many ways, this book presents a practical way to be transformed by the experience of God and is valuable regardless of religious tradition.
However, conservative Christians will have difficulty with much of his theology, which is closely akin to Christian Science. I am a conservative, though open-minded Christian. My suggestion to conservatives is to use the concepts presented and rephrase some of the lines to fit your theology, but do not destroy the essence. For example, Goldsmith refers to "the Christ within." A conservative can easily modify this to just "Christ within." The harder part for most conservatives will be the idea that someone with a metaphysical perspective of God could experience God and teach them anything truthful about God.
I recommend this book together with books such as "Testament of Devotion," "Open Mind, Open Heart" and "Practicing His Presence" by Brother Lawrence. I would be willing to correspond with anyone about this book or others that I have reviewed.

This second edition is a significant rewrite that contains lots of new concepts and examples. Focusing on visualization at a glance, this edition takes into account tools and technologies that have evolved since the first edition more than six years ago.

Stephen guides us through the mechanics of how humans perceive visualizations, and then translates that into guidelines we can use to synthesize data into effective dashboards. Far from being a dry read, his style is so direct and hard-lined I have to smile reading his work. For example, he shows (IN FULL COLOR) real examples of dashboards he's found, publicly flogging them down, telling us what not to do (woe unto him who ends up in a Stephen Few book). He then walks us through some excellent examples of dashboards, giving us clear vision for our own data.

If you build dashboards of any kind, you should definitely consider getting acquainted with Stephen's work.

Few encourages us to create "eloquence through simplicity"

Stephen Few has made significant contributions to the field of data visualization, publishing books like Show Me the Numbers: Designing Tables and Graphs to Enlighten, Now You See It: Simple Visualization Techniques for Quantitative Analysis, and Information Dashboard Design. Drawing inspiration from experts like Edward Tufte and Colin Ware, Few has a real talent for bringing theoretical concepts to life in a practical way.

The first edition of Information Dashboard Design: The Effective Visual Communication of Data, published in 2006, completely changed my approach to building dashboards. The second edition of Information Dashboard Design is a significant revision and rewrite of its predecessor, with lots of new material. It is a reflection of how the world of data visualization has changed since 2006. None of the data visualization tools available at that time supported Edward Tufte's sparklines or the author's own bullet charts. Nor were there Apple iPhones (released in 2007) and iPads (released in 2010) to display analytics. The changes are also reflected in the subtitle, which is now "displaying data for at-a-glance monitoring" instead of "the effective visual communication of data."

What has not changed since 2006 is software vendors' pursuit of gaudy impractical visualizations like exploding pie charts. The acknowledgements are classic Stephen Few:

"Without a doubt I owe the greatest debt of gratitude to the many software vendors who have done so much to make this book necessary by failing to address or even contemplate the visual design requirements of dashboards. Their kind disregard for visual design has given me focus, ignited my passion, and guaranteed my livelihood for years to come."

Although Few is well-known for his disdain of pie charts, his advice is grounded in the science of visual perception. He devotes entire chapters to sparklines and bullet charts. And he provides new guidelines for visualizing data on smartphones and tablets. The chapter "Putting it All Together" provides in-depth analysis of real dashboards submitted for a dashboard design competition. It's very instructive to see multiple dashboards attempting to meet the same set of business requirements, with varying degrees of success. And the book concludes with "From Imaging to Unveiling," a short but meaningful chapter about how to design for success. Not only is the content valuable, but the hardcover edition is beautifully rendered in color with high-quality materials.

This is a book about dashboard design- not implementation. It's not written exclusively for dashboard developers, but anyone who has an interest in bringing useful data visualization to life in their organization. Few's goal is "eloquence through simplicity" and he achieves it with this new book.

The Definitive Guide

I've been working as a data visualization consultant for over six years and when a client asks me the "one" book to read about dashboard design--this is the book I recommend. Excellent.
