Motives for Conflict

The rating on this volume is earned by the final two issues alone.
Transformers fandom, like any other collective group of fans, is splintered off into camps - those that prefer the Robots in Disguise element of Transformers fighting in secret on Earth, and those who see Earth as yet another tactical battleground and that the conflict between Autobot and Decepticon is best told in space. I am of the latter, but those from the first fandom camp will still find appeal in the final two issues because they shed light on the origin of the war. This also sets up both volume 6 on Earth and volume 7 on Cybertron.
This volume starts off with Rodimus journeying back to Earth after recovering the Matrix, the reactions and implications of his return, and ends with the voyage to Cybertron for the Chaos confrontation (volume 7). This section is the highlight as it features the conversation to end conversations - Optimus and Megatron reflecting on how it all went wrong, very much like Xavier and Magneto. Here is the closest IDW has come to mirroring in some way the origin that the novel EXODUS and the season finale of Transformer Prime have touched upon. There's a bit of prelude to the Megatron Origin volume as well. There are moments where you can sympathize with Megatron and it explains to much degree why there's always been that hesitation between them both not to kill each other.
Art wise, in my opinion, is an improvement over volume 1. I know the desire IDW had for Ongoing was to sorta blend the Live Action films with G1, but I never cared for it. This volume is a lot more traditional.
In closing, any fan of Optimus, Rodimus, or Megatron, this is a must read.

Overall a good read

This book starts out with a bang and ends on an explosion.
The first issues fill the reader in on the fate of Rodimus and a certain rhyming autobot who hasn't been seen since his fantastic spotlight issue several years ago. Rodimus Having been blasted into space by a ressurected Megatron finds himself stranded on an unknown planet with the Autobot Matrix of leadership imbedded in his chest.
Events shift to Cybertron where we meet up with Ironhide, Sunstreaker, and Bob the insecticon (Mike Costa's failed attempt at injecting humor into the story), who hitch a ride with Rodimus and crew to Earth to meet up with Optimus.
This first part of the book isn't bad, it's several issues of just bringing characters togethor but it's done well. The last two issues of this book are where the really good stuff lies.
James Roberts takes over as writer for these two issues and it's abundantly clear where the talent lies. These two issues alone tell a story that any Transformer fan can and will enjoy. Focusing on a pre war Cybertron, Roberts gives us a brilliant tale that really shocases the motivation behind Optimus Prime and Megatron. This alone has been one of the most enjoyable moments reading IDW's Transformer books.
In total Chaos Theory is a good read, and was well worth the purchase.

Transformers, Vol 5: Chaos Theory

I loved the story and I loved the art. I also loved the plot of this story and its conclusion. I didn't like how Brawn beatup StarScream but I'll let you read that yourself and decide... The book itseld is very durable and the pages are a nice glossy texture that makes for easy reading. I HIGHLY recommend this and the previous 4 volumes!!! I have them all and I have read them all repeatedly... Good reading my friends!
