Great Supplement
By Voodoo54
This is a 6th edition update of all the classic master villians from the Champions universe. The hardback binding with the color pages really make it nice. I'm really glad I made this purchase.

Best of a bad batch
By Matthew Lane
Of the three books in the villain series this is the best of the lot, which in its self is not saying much.
As with many "villain books" across quite a few different systems this one suffers from many different problems. The first problem is that the characters are just all so very ordinary. The point of the entire super hero genre is that individuals are unique: Unique in background, unique in power set, unique in appearance, unique in outlook. Unfortunately this series really falls down in that regard.
By and large the characters are woefully boring, with the exception of Doctor Destroyer & Shadow Destroyer: Possibly Mechanon depending on your predilection towards the old silver age robot villain concept. But having said that Doctor Destroyers generals were much less impressive, from a character design stand point, if not a number crunching stand point (since the writing is much more important then the system): For example character like Gigaton & Meteor come off as terminally disinteresting & they were the most interesting characters that Destroyer had in his employee.
Shadow Destroyer fairs a lot better in this regard, as does Mechanon, but neither really felt or that solid in this book. In fact all things considered both Destroyer & Shadow destroyer are better presented in the "Book of the Destroyer," a book only about those two characters.
The other big problem with this book is layout & presentation of data. When reading a villain book, the book should be trying to sell me on "The Villains" & make it feel like these villains can & do exist in a pre-existing comic book universe & now in my game. This does not read like that... This reads more like a street hawker trying to convince you that you really want to buy his cheap obvious knock off product. I can create villains for most systems in less then 20 minutes, in fact its quite fun; I come to a villain book for ideas from other people: The less work I have to do to insert it into my game the better.
Straight off the bat, the first thing I should see when I look at any given entry should be "the villain." The villain art work is the first entry point of access & the first entry point to interest for any reader: They should literally see the image of the character before even the name of the character. So strangely this book & the others in the series bury the image on page 2 & in some case page 3.
As for the art itself, it's not without a fair level of technical quality, yet it lacks for something: Any belief that these characters are actually super villains.
The designs are to loose, to sloppy & without any level of personal touches that make super villain costumes super. Half the costumes just don't suit the characters wearing them, either from the point of view of verisimilitude, or from the role of the character: for instance The Shadow Queen looks nothing like a queen, or a evil fairy tale step mother (even though we are expressly told half a dozen times, that that is her story role).
She is literally a master villain & a powerful sorceress in her own rights, with the complete power of the Shadow Realms at her disposal: She should look like it. She should be bedecked in spidery smoky gauss of shadowy mist, black leather with intricate engravings of constantly shifting designs, ornate jewellery of the finest quality & draped in a liquid silk cape of shadows... Not a knock off ball dress & a head dress that looks like it wouldn't be amiss in a Disney princess movie, 20 years ago.
As for art style, can we please pick one or two similar styles and stick to them? I know Hero publishing is well known for reusing artwork, but images like the coloured image of Sunburst really lets the book down... Especially when they are in the same team section as Phaze, who is drawn in a less cartoony fashion. The colouring of some of these old images also makes the discord between the styles even more obvious & jarring.
An on top of those two major issues, there are also a whole heap of smaller issues, including disinteresting or silly character backgrounds (which I wont go into depth on because I could write an entire 100 page novel on where the writing falls down in just this volume), tiny character images, huge under utilised border spacing, the horrible yellow layout & the use of multiple different distracting fonts for character headings.
Frankly, the biggest problem with this book seems to have is that it went for quantity over quality. There are too many substandard villains & to few villains who are worth investing your time in as a GM. In fact outside of the fact that character design (the number crunching) in champions takes forever & just isn't fun, the actual characters in this book could be largely dismissed & even reskinned entirely. I know many people would consider that an advantage, but if you can reskin an entire character as a different character, then that's a sign that your character is probably not all that memorable.
I would advise against picking up this, or any of the other books in the villain series, as this could be considered questionably the best of the series (with solo villains being the worst of the series).
