Glad I did not go to school in Europe!
By M. Anita Clayton
When I was reading this book, I wanted to reach out and talk to the author. I wish there had been some way of knowing her so she could have gone to school with me in the US. I did not have as rough of a time in Architecture school as she did. It was very hard, don’t get me wrong. Most of our professors were better than most. The big difference was the bond that I had and continue to have with my fellow students and exceptional professors. After many years we still communicate and help each other.
The work environment, however, as the white male dominated field to be field as it is, I found to be viscous where workers were rewarded for their sabotage activity of fellow workers they feel threatened about. It is very disheartening especially when salaries and working conditions are near poverty levels and sweat shop conditions. I understand her tenaciousness in finishing her studies as I, in my 50’s after raising a family and taking care of elderly relatives, still pursue my registration. The study and the love of the field can many times resemble an abusive lover that you can never rid yourself of.
I am glad she wrote this book to shine a light on the inequitable activities of the field. I only reason why I did not give it five stars is due to the fact she did say what or how she is doing today. I pray that she is well and that somehow the field changes for the better for all people of all demographics. The world will always be in need of good design.

Thanks Moira!
I am totally agreed with most viewpoints about both architecture discipline and so do architecture education nowadays and I am also one of the "victims" inside this field. Luckily my interest still support me a lot even I still have hard life in this field till now.
I at least up to now understand that I am not so worse when my situation compares with that of yours and the most essential of all, I know what is the most important for me now !
Thank You and God bless us.

Architect's nightmare.....
By Quiseling
As a licensed Architect in the U.S., there were many portions of Ms. Malcolm's story I could definitely relate to, especially the work load in school. The administrative nightmare she went through left me wondering about the state of Architectural Academia in Europe.
Even so, the story is more a rant on the "System" rather than insightful examination of the experiences of young people in Architectural Institutions. I would have loved to read more stories regarding not only her experiences in Architecture School, but a wider section of her colleagues as well.
I wish Ms. Malcolm well in her future endeavors and hope she succeeds at whatever she decides to pursue.
